I know Minecraft is a square-based continuum, but I still don't like the "Borg Cube" look of simply building a giant stone box.
As such, I'm trying to build towers. But right now they look kinda lousy. I suppose the problem with using squares to make a round shape is that the smaller the circle is, the worse it looks.

Any tips on constructing good looking towers?
Paint program is a good way to help design circles and other structures. When you go to Paint, zoom all the way in, set to grid mode, and using the thinnest line.
Another good way is to make a single block tower and add lava, let it flow all the way down, and one block on top, quickly add water, let it flow down. Repeat as many times as desired. (Note: the more you layer it the taller and wider it gets)
Using paint to make circles/domes
(measures 101 meters/blocks in diameter)
Love the Plotz generator, wish it had an interface to input your own designs, that would be awesome.
I like to build at the direct centre of the map, build a tower to the top limit, and a mine to the bottom, with a redstone powered rail-a-coaster in the centre. I start with a 9x9 circling the centre block at x = 0 and z = 0, and dig right to bedrock, then work back up to y = 12. Fill the hole to bedrock with water (for a safety net), and start the mine going in 4 directions (NSWE). Then the with cobblestone I take out of the shaft, I smelt it back into smooth stone, or convert it to stone bricks, and make an inverted square(or diamond) pattern that follows the blocks diagonally and goes all the way up, so that the 9x9 pattern around centre goes from bedrock to build ceiling (one awesome jump!), Now, you can build the foundation to whatever level you want, I like a circular or star-shaped pattern (but I am a symmetry nazi...). building at centre can have its pros and cons, sometimes there just aren't that many resources there, or maybe the abandoned mineshaft is north, stronghold is south, etc. Anyhow, Minecraft is the ultimate choose-your-own adventure for the 21st century, so do it your way, Thanks for reading.
P.S My GT is Mr Newf (same as here just with a space), and I play a fair bit, and find my own worlds get a bit monotonous after some time, so if you are into PvP or co-op building, gimme a shout!

I LOVE how it lets you deconstruct by level. So handy.
