I think it is just because the game doesn't want you to permeate or change the stone boundaries of the game. Sorry, I really have no reason, though, as that was just a guess.
Right now it is by design... Unfortunately I would say a safety feature going a bit too far...>< Well that is what it looks like. Boundaries are there to keep the weird stuff out... Like what happened in the pc earlier on with the far lands...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Oh okay, so it's like no wall is suppose to be there but there is just for asthetics I guess(based on world size), that makes sense, weird, but makes sense. Would be weird if we just stared into nothingness or something.
I've seen something similar but much weirder, I broke a block and behind it was this black space with what appeared to be hell behind it, there was all kinds of lava and nether block but it wasn't the nether, looked more hellish, it disappeared once I moved away, SO weird.
If you want, you can just forfeit the space right at the edge and build whatever you like 1 block in from it. It is frustrating, though, when the game displays diamonds in that unminable zone. I have one world where I'm staring at 4 of them in a wall... and I wants them so bad.
I had the same problem regarding unmineable diamonds. i was able to place tnt by the wall and surprisingly that worked. I don't know how it worked, but it blew up the unmineable blocks.

Yeah, the game's weird like that.
It actually has 2 unminable layers, the closer of which can be blown up.
It looks really pretty in ravines...or if you detonate the area.
