I have turned an underground raven into a meadow with grass/flowers and wells. It's two levels and about 600 to 800 grass blocks of area long and narrow. I want an underground hunting area near my main base. The game is survival hard. I have left my avatar at the edge of the raven and in the middle of the raven for 40 minutes straight and not a single animal has spawned down there. The raven is 20 blocks below a desert if that matters.
Why are animals not spawning here? They spawn on single blocks on the side of mountains so I thought this would work.
thanks. didn't think the desert would matter because I had gone underground. guess I'll have to go to the next raven under the snow biome unless someone knows why that wouldn't work?

I'm almost 99% sure that sun is not needed.
They way they spawn in 1.7.3 and past the 1.8.2 are quite a bit different, although they still spawn on grass. But I am no expert at this so it is only something that can be trial and error. I have not had any spawn on grass below ground past the 1.8.2 update, this is why I am assuming so. Also they don't spawn as much as 1.7.3, even though it appears that way. It is definitely more than when the first time 1.8.2 came out, but actually a little less than 1.7.3.

Like the last guy said. Just pull a Noah and trick two of each into falling down there then breed away.
Either dig a shaft with a water catch thingy or make a bit of a lake and just push them into the ravine.
Assuming a ravine is what you are trying to talk about. Hope it helps.

unsure, but they do spawn on grass in specific biomes...
