When playing with my friends, I'm the one who immediately starts building our shelter. Then I slowly build it up to give us all rooms... and slowly expand outwards. I eventually start adventuring and exploring as well as mining.
I usually play survival on normal and use my flat creative world for testing out new redstone ideas and contraptions, then rebuilding them on my survival map.
Survival, strictly. I don't dig Creative, but I do enjoy seeing what friends and random folk here come up with using it. I just prefer doing it the "hard" way, personally.
I am very much addicted to the early game of survival; hastily collecting resources while simultaneously scouting for a suitable location for building. The rush for food, the carefully done expansions (or total rebuilding) of my first dwelling, the eventual quest for diamond, obsidian and then the hellish dive into the Nether...these things complete my Minecraft experience.
After all this, when every possible item has been collected in suitable quanities, I find myself getting restless...and starting a new seed to do it all over again. This has happened at least a dozen times.
Creative in Survival Mode. I love building gigantic buildings and cool stuff, but it's soooo much more rewarding to do so knowing that you had to hunt down all of the resources yourself while fighting off mobs and such.
I am more of a die hard survivalist, if you will. However, I usually delay on a stable food supply a ton, and end up just dying regularly until I finally make a stable food supply.
