OK, here's the project I'm planning on wasting a perfectly good Saturday morning on.
My castle has no dungeon/basement/etc right now. Just built on solid land. As we all know, a castle just cannot be without a sublevel. It's a rule somewhere.
In the past I usually just built a lava-blade grinder down there, with a water delivery system of the drops. It did require me standing near it to lure the baddies, but then I figured maybe I could use a snow golem to put the whole thing on autopilot.
But then, I came to realize, with my Fortune II sword, I'm not hurting for resources any more. I have more string, spider eyes, gunpowder and bones than I know what to do with (but not arrows. ALWAYS need more arrows!)... and realized what I really do want is the experience, so I can craft bigger and better weapons.
So what I think I'm going to build is a Battle Pit.
Basically, a 20x20 or so area, 5-6 blocks down... a place where I can rumble with the spawns. It'll be dark down there, of course... and I originally thought I'd build a network of glow lanterns (powered by redstone) into the floors, so I can turn on the lights when I want to stop the spawn and collect drops, but then I realized the Xbox version doesn't use redstone powered lamps.
I was also going to build a catwalk to snipe from.... and set up a bunch of arrow turrets as well. Also, make the floor obsidian, as Creepers are sure to wreck havoc on the place.
Anyway, its an idea I'm kicking around the ol' noodle right now. I'm sure someone has built something similar, and I'd like to hear your ideas and tweaks.
Especially with the lights. Any idea how I can do the lights? Pistons hiding torches, perchance?
Heh.... yeah, maybe I should have clarified I'm STARTING the project tomorrow, not finishing it.
But then, is ANYTHING in Minecraft ever truly finished? Everything is a work in progress.

i've dug out five stacks of obsidian it took me a whole night with my friend. we made a jail out of it
