I friend just about anyone that requests on Xbox live. Gamers are all kindred spirits and I enjoy playing with fellow XBLA players. Some turn out to be jerks, but that's when I unfriend them.
I love the idea of sharing a Minecraft world with other players, even ones I don't know well.
But I don't.
Lately I kick people that I see have joined my server. As soon as I see people are on, if I don't know them very, very well, out they go.
It's rude and it makes me look like a jerk. But frankly this is because I've been burned before. I think most of us have.
It takes MOMENTS to destroy what it takes hours to build in Minecraft. Also, people almost universally help themselves to diamonds, obsidian, glow dust and other things, so that you need to hide your chests with these materials.
Frankly, I think I need to play offline until we make Minecraft a little more grief-proof.
Some ideas... and I know these ideas can be used for griefing in themselves, but it's a start for discussion:
1.) Chests need to have an option that they can only be used by the person placing them.
2.) There needs to be "no destroy" zones.... naturally in-game mechanics can destroy the things as normal, but players can't.
3.) There needs to be "private" areas that can't be entered without permission.
I made the mistake of having an open game, and leaving it unattended for a while. My castle looked like a Frat House after Spring Break. They wrecked the place. And all of my valuables were found and plundered.
But I really like want the aspect of building a world cooperatively.
This thought just occured to me as I was reading your post, you could set up a test world to "vet" new players, one with some simple buildings and some chests of goodies to test them to see if you would allow them into your world that you have all the time invested in.

2 & 3 I am not fond of.... However 1 would need a bit of work, as I would rather have 2 types of chests, well maybe 3. The 2 normal ones which is the regular chest and the ender chest. The final chest should be what you are mentioning, some kind of personal locking that only the person placing it can access.
I don't like the idea of putting that on all standard chests, it just doesn't make sense to do so. However to add a chest to the game that does just that, and has a similar recipe would be fine...
Also due note there is a xbox requests thread on the first page of posts usually...lol
Creates 9 x 9 x 9 zone where players can not kill anything or each other.
Also if powered by redstone any chest, furnace or dispensor in the zone will not open.
Crafting: This block should be VERY expensive. Perhaps
Redstone Block + 2 Potions of Healing + 2 Obsidian + 4 Diamonds
Yes I know we don't have Redstone blocks so I guess they will just have to add that too

Please actually read posts before responding, so you don't end up looking stewped.

I agree with Tamorr. Not fond of #2 or #3. I would like a type of chest that would respond/open only for the gamertag that placed it. However, there is also a need for a community type chest that may be opened by anyone. Having a type of personalize chest would certainly have stopped the little kids from pilfering each other around our place and prevented a number of tears over missing diamonds. (It's less critical now because over these past few months they have learned to share the items in their chests rather well.)
I just started playing on an online "server" and oh man... So many things that should be implemented to make the game more enjoyable.
It quickly became a game of "hiding chests", things stolen(i.e pistons, levers items from chests) and farmlands destroyed..for no real reason either.. These are simple and craftable items
I understand my enchanting table being swiped.. but really? Just use it.. don't take it! lol
I guess it's that "griefing" I've heard so much about.
Oh well it is definitely a different kind of game when you decide to go online with strangers.. Fun in its own way..but very frustrating!!
Though that moment when you get back who you think got you .. is priceless!
Specially when it's a group chat and you can hear their reaction.. Ha!

Agree. Online with people you don't know well is a whole different kettle of fish. I really like that the XBox is limited to a max of 8 players at a time and allows 4-player local splitscreen. It just suits me better to be playing only with people I know very well.
I think with a locked chest it could be crafted like a normal chest with a piece of iron in the middle. The option to allow locked chests could be a host option. Locked chests could be very useful, but they would need a customization feature as well. You could set it so only admins can access it, etc.
*RANT WARNING*
This is what happens when children could care less about maturity, and reason, and just become mindless self-indulging... things.
Even on a video game, come on kids, is it cool to take someones hours of work and destroy/steal it? Work that they're proud of? I've never been griefed, as I don't play with randoms, but it still gets under my skin. Meh, maybe I'm just too mature for here...

Why couldn't the mindless self-indulg-er just use the enchanting table instead of taking it? I'm sure if the thief would of asked to use it you would of allowed it, you seem like a nice person. Sadly, we all know this is a constant reoccurring event.
I play with real life friends, ONLY. Never has anything gone missing out of our chests. We have respect for each other, and take pride in each other's works.
This thread, and other related griefing threads, is the EXACT reason that when you look at my created threads, I've made 2 dedicated to hosting my own server, and immediately ended them because of the people who joined.
I've had someone walk into my claimed house, and start digging down IN MY FLOOR to make a mine. Were they mad, or just flat out stupid? I'll never know, cause I'll never use the Find Players section for my own servers, ever again. I asked age requirements, and said I wanted mature players in each. Each time, I was lied to about age (seriously kids?), and maturity... well, let's not even go there, haha.
OP, I enjoy the idea of locked chests. NOT so that my stuff doesn't get stolen, for I refuse to play with those morons. It just sounds like a enjoyable look. Maybe in the center of the chest add a iron bar? Sounds good enough for a lock.
Last message is for all griefers and thieves: Grow up.
I think instead of the (allow players to mine and place blocks) thing we should have a checklist of all the blocks in the game and if they are not checked the person cannot mine that block it would keep them from being able to grief certain buildings ect and still be able to mine.
I'm always worried when I read things like these and people refer to the perpetrators as their "friends"
Not sure what kind of friends people play with but they don't seem like very good friend material if they're going to be a totally loser in a video game.
Simplest solution. Add something like the Lockette Mod (as a paid DLC) from the PC. It allows you to put locks on chests and doors. That makes it so that no one but you or an admin can access or destroy that chest. It does the same thing for doors. Makes it so that only you can access or destroy the door it is put on. It can also be used on other things like Furnaces and what not.
This is what Lockette does... Only those listed on the sign can active the block it protects.
Another thing that could be added is WorldGuard. What that does is let an Admin choose a chunk of land, from bedrock to the sky limit, and give it to a player as their own. This means that only that player can mine or break any blocks within that area. Of course, since you're the owner, you can choose to let others mine and place blocks in the area just by adding their name to the list.
Some form of those two things, Lockette and WorldGaurd, should be added into the Xbox 360 Edition.

My thoughts exactly. People who greif/steal, and say "oh, it's just a game" are the ones who usually act the same obnoxious way face-to-face.
Locks could be very easily implemented in MCXBLA because we can just slap a button code on like the parental control lock implemented into the system (the one that you have to punch of code in with button combinations to access certain things that are restricted.)

You can disable TNT any time when you load the seed, just click the button that says "More options", and remove the check mark on "TNT Explodes"

It's the same ol' tale of woe since the Internet started.
People love to be jerks without having to face reprocussions, and that's easy to do in the world of online gaming.
Why will I mess with you, rob you and antagonize you over the internet but I won't do it face to face?
Simple. Over the internet, you can't do anything about it. Face to face you'd probably knock my teeth out.
