An idea, nothing else. And yes, I already used the search function to see if there was anything similar discussed.
My idea is that since we have finite worlds, that they could attach multiple worlds together, at the borders.
If that doesn't make sense, think of it this way.
Imagine a grid. the world you spawn in would be (0,0). go one world to the east would be (1,0), the the west (-1,0) and so on. each section would be treated like a seperate world, in a way. it would be generated like a new world, most likely with a random seed.
on each of the world edges, they could put a sort of gateway that allows travel between them. only the host could activate them (and moderators). maybe they would be able to be activated at any time, or could require a 1-time payment of some material, or require payment each transport.
that's my idea in a nutshell. any opinions, or additions?
I was thinking they could just add something like an Ender Chest (Or just repurpose the EnderChest so it works this way) So that anything in it could be used on any world you own. A sort of cloud storage for Minecraft.
They could make it so that it only transfers the items between survival worlds, if they wanted. But really, they could just go into creative and shove a million diamonds into a regular chest, if that's really how they wanted to play. It's no different.
Not sure why the search failed you, I've seen this idea a couple times before. The other threads might have just been worded rather oddly. But yes, it would be an interesting and useful feature for many folks. Frankly I don't care, I'm fine with the world size as it stands now. But I know there are a lot of people out there who want every biome/resource/structure, and this would make for a perfect solution with no negative effects.
This is an old idea discussed many times already (try searching "linked world").
Burns already said in 4J's interview that this isn't possible.
Basically, they already know that we want bigger worlds, and all the different ways there are to get there (plus some we haven't thought of). It's up to 4J to see if there's some way to do it (but I, and they, doubt it).
People have put forth this idea before, but the developers just don't care about world size, honestly. There is no doubt this idea would work, and it would be fairly easy to implement. But the devs just don't want to do it.
I disagree with the portals requiring a one-time payment, though... what if you got to the other side, and the new world didn't have any of the objects required for payment? Also, it should be FREE to travel.
I honestly don't see why this couldn't be implemented, unless If you were at 0,0 and you go to 1,0 then you go back to 0,0 it may generate a new world, deleting your previous one, and that would be bad.

It would be cool if we could get a multiverse system of sorts...
Yes, I don't see why they couldn't implement the multi-verse mod, great idea, unfortunatly, it probably won't be implemented.
I think the portal should be like a nether portal, but built out of diamond ore (How to get diamond ore for noobs: silk touch pickaxe).
Actually, I know why they can't put multiworlds, If someone has lots of players (like 6) and every single one is in a different world, it would probably cause everyone's xbox to crash. Now I'm starting to hate xbox for being outdated...

One issue is that the world being left has to be completely closed... that means everyone in it has to vacate to the next world since the host XBox is incapable of keeping more than one world file open at a time. This means that, as far as ease of moving from one world to the next, it would not be any quicker than closing the file and opening the new world file... which can be done right now. With creative, you can easily give yourself an inventory of items that you had in the world you would be closing (if you decide that you want to play a new world as a sort of continuation of an old one). So, I really don't see any tangible benefit to this idea.
Survival as a concept is all about starting from scratch and surviving as far into the game as possible using whatever resources that are available in that world. It is supposed to get tougher to find resources as they get used up. That's the way it works in the real world (which is limited in size). To me, the XBox limited size world makes absolute sense for a survival game. Having an endless world and, therefore, essentially unlimited resources, defeats the idea of "survival" completely.
There are many other features that I would like to see the processing power, RAM and programming time used for first... like being able to individually select the biomes that comprise a new world (as was just being discussed in another thread).

So what? What's wrong with saying to my friend,
"Hey, let's take this minecart track to my World 2 portal!"
Then we arrive there and, together, travel to my World 2.
Yes, this could be done by exiting the game, loading up another world, and inviting my friend to it, but the IMMERSION is gone. If you do that, you're no longer in the Minecraft world, you're on an Xbox, showing your friend various worlds you have saved separately.
It would be so freaking simple, and so beneficial, to just let us build portals to travel TOGETHER to other worlds.

It's not "so feaking simple." Two files would have to be open at one time. It's not the same as the nether. The nether exists inside the same file as the overworld; it just looks like another world; but another world is another file on the hard drive. The host XBox is not equipped to keep the two files open while everyone "portals" over to the new world from the old or worse, some people want to portal and others don't. That transition period where the two files would have to be open would overload the processing and RAM of the host XBox. It is NOT a server, but is being made to perform some server-like tasks. To do this sort of operation requires an actual server.

Dude... you're not understanding what I'm saying.
Only ONE world would be open at a time. When you go through a Travel Portal, it links that portal to a new world, which is stored in a separate save file. Everyone in your game must gather in the portal to travel to the new world AT THE SAME TIME. The game would then go into a quick Travel Loading Screen while the other side of the portal is generated (literal seconds), then everyone would appear in the new world, at the linked portal.
I think they should have teleporters that can be activated and a scenic bolt of lightning strikes like on Namalsk DayZ map all the players will be warned by everything going orange and everybody teleporting to the teleporter in the next world. Of course this could be disabled in PVP so one team can't teleport everybody and slaughter them all.
However for this to work you would have to have a special teleporter block in both worlds which would require a few rare materials.
But only ones like minerals that will always be on your map.

my idea was to allow for more exploring, or to make it more likely for someone to have all the structures

actually, what about emeralds? they spawn (rarely...) once implemented, and you could always trade for them
