I'm sorry if this has been asked several times before, but I have a question about updating my Minecraft when I don't have an internet connection at home. Is it possible to take my detachable hard drive off my 360, and just take it to a friend's house and use it with his 360 to download the update? Or do I have to take the whole shebang with me? I'm sorry if this seems silly, but I really don't know, and would like to be able to get the update as easy as possible. I also worry that this may adversely effect either my hard drive or his 360. Any input would be appreciated.

Just take your whole xbox over to his place as that way you can garrentee getting the update this would be the easiest way P.S Shebang, shebang Ha What!
I'm not certain but I don't think it's possible to interchange hdds to get an update in the manner you are suggesting. This goes for any XB360 game, not just Minecraft. When you download a game it is registered to the device and is only playable on that device unless you do a licence transfer to a new console. If he also has a copy of minecraft the HDD swap may be possible, check google for answers to this question.
But to be on the safe side, What I'd suggest to you is to bite the bullet and take your whole console to your friends house and update.

You already have an internet connection (you posted here), so just hook your xbox up to it, if only temporarily…. or am I missing something obvious?
If you don't, sounds like it's a PITA to drive to your friends house just to borrow his internet. But to answer your question, to save all the hassle, just take your xbox over there and upgrade it.

I actually posted this from my work computer. Even I'm not daft enough to post from home about not being able to download it at my own home. Guess I'll either have to pack the whole system over, or suck it up and wait three more weeks till I'm finished moving and have my own internet connection again. thanks for everyone's advice though.
You could also copy Title Update 7 from your friends Xbox 360 HDD to a USB flash drive (configured as Memory Unit).
Take the USB flash drive to your home and copy Title Update 7 to your Xbox 360 HDD.
You can find Title Update 7 here:
System > Storage > Hard Drive > Games and Apps > Minecraft > Minecraft Title Update (7MB)
Thanks for the suggestion, too bad he doesn't play on Minecraft on Xbox. Oh well, it was a good idea.
