My set up is there is a chest down one block into the ground, and pistons set up one level up with blocks so that it will cover up the chest. I want the pistons to be stuck open and covering the chest so that when you step on the right pressure plate the pistons will retract to reveal the chest underneath. I can get it to stay open, but when you step onto the pressure plate, nothing happens. I hope I explained this well enough, any help?
Pictures of your circuit are needed to help you. With out them, all i can say is to hook the pistons up to an inverter, then run your wire to the pressure plates. Its all very easily hidden.
on the redstone leading to the piston put a redstone torch ( this will cause it to be extended at all times) Then attach redstone to the pressure plate which will cause it to retract and that's it. Basically the plate will reverse the flow that the redstone torch is causing... ------------------------------------- ------------------ redstone line ---------
Piston redstone line torchBLOCK pressure plate.

This.
The piston needs an odd number of redstone torches to stay in the "extended" position. Then it's just a matter of adding repeaters to extend the duration that the piston retracts... and redstone dust to complete the circuit.

1 is an odd # and as long as he stands on the pressure plate it will remain "retracted", so there would be no need for repeaters.

Yes, 1 is an odd number... I just stated that fact in case the pressure plate wasn't on top of the chest... and he needed to somehow make it work to suit his situation.
Exactly. And repeaters wouldn't make the pistons retract for a longer period anyway.
As I stated above, we don't know if the pressure plate is right next to the chest. It really would defeat the purpose of having a "hidden chest" if you put the pressure plate right next to it, now wouldn't it?
What's this pressure plate do? Oh... a hidden chest!
You posted extended time circuits in another thread, which was why I mentioned repeaters. He could step on the plate in another room... and would need just enough time to be able to access the chest... thus needing the repeaters in an extended circuit.
Just for clarification, in case diagrams aren't satisfying the OP, I took some shots of the most simple/compact design I could think of. If you were looking for something a bit more hidden, it's easily adaptable. But, if need be, I can make a new model and take some screeenycaps.

Oh, that's why you suggested repeaters? I could have sworn it was some other reason.
Then it's just a matter of adding repeaters to extend the duration that the piston retracts...
... Nahhhhhhh, I must be simply imagining things.
The rest of that post isn't worth analyzing and debating. I hate trying to argue with someone that changes the point of their argument every few minutes. In my experience, it has always been futile.

Yes!!! Mr. Nose backed my mediocre redstone knowledge! Now i'll consider my knowledge no longer mediocre but "entry level"!

Think outside your little box for once.
