I have a pretty big animal farm by my house. But lately I tried breeding them and no baby animals would spawn. It looked like they were trying to, but couldn't. Is there a limit to how many animals you can have in one chunk at a certain time? If so, how many?
The cap is about 45 per animal type.
I have had about 40 chickens, no more spawn when breeding/throwing eggs. and about 50 cows. They all escaped so I cant really do anything about it...

I had the same problem with escaping animals. I built a barn and closed the doors which kept them in but if they are in the "pasture" they leave. I put up a fence that was stacked two high which did not hold. Is there any way to keep them outside to stay or do they have to be locked up?

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
To take the test, check out http://minecraftnoobtest.com/test.php
I actually believe the cap is for all passive mobs combined. Lets say the cap is 100. You can have 80 cows and 20 chickens. I really didn't do any real research but I think this is how it works.

Use a block other than fences until the bug fixes. You could also try adding a second layer, meaning 2 fences thick? Can't guarantee it will help but it's worth a shot

Oh no, They were in a 4 deep hole and a creeper came along and blew up the wall, and, 90% of the animals were there and they all went crazy to get out.
Just put them in a hole thats 2+ blocks deep, then add a fence around. Problem solved.

I'm pretty sure the cap is for all passive mobs like Ideologic_Panda said. I tried breeding pigs when I only had 5 and nothing happened. I had tons of cows and sheep and they also wouldn't. I'm just glad I don't have a problem with them escaping. Thanks for your input everyone.

Can anyone confirm this? And would that be ALL animals, as in cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, wolves, and mooshrooms?
EDIT: Nevermind, didn't read the whole thread. Do you have any idea how many animals you actually have slaughterhouse?
Well I had 5 chickens & could only get 5 chicks :-/ & there were no other mobs in the area, flatland test map, if I killed a chicken I could spawn another, so bugger knows lol kind of made my chicken cooker redundant :-/.

I don't believe it is a hard and fast number either per animal type or for all animals combined. I believe it is more of a formula that takes stock of what is going on at a particular moment in the game (like how may players are in the game and how spread out they are) and then makes a calculation as to whether or not to spawn more animals and of what types.
Hello all I have done some testing of my own searched wiki pedia and asked 4jstudios I know the solution please if this anwsers your questions aprove my post NOTE TEST WERE MADE IN TITLE UPDATE 10
Aparently pigs cows & sheep share the cap of how many animals you can breed the current cap is 67 per world ( you can have an extra 67 pigs cows and sheep in the nether & a extra 67 in the end this requires you to be in creative) by killin all pigs and sheep you can breed 67 cows or viceversa 67 sheep or pigs (0 to 67) wolves have a separate cap breeding cap is 16 chickens by feeding them any seed and or nether warth by taking a couple stacks of eggs to the nether and end you can have ann extra 16 per dimencion this can be done in creative and survival alike
Dogs(wolves) like chickens have a separate cap of 16 wolves max per world
Now it is possible that some animals may get stranded in your world lost in caves or extreme hills so you may not always have 67 cap due to this or 16 chickens / dogs
What about mooshrooms they also have their separate cap I only tested mooshrooms in creative so here is my great discovery
You can spawn 10 mooshrooms whit a spawn egg and then its caped but it seems the there is no cap for their breeding in a creative super flat world I did the breedind in 19 by 19 block spaces and breeded as many as I could I counted 278 mooshrooms I got prety lagy I estimated about 30 frames per seccond I could not belive it so I switched over to hard to see if mobs could spawn and they did this was the 278 mooshrooms plus 67 cows sheep and pigs 16 chickens and 16 wolves (forgot to mention squids whit span eggs max cap us 13)
plus all the mobs then I got a pair of shears and sheared all the mooshrooms and all turned to cows (laged alot since then reloaded the save)if you shear the mooshrooms you can breed and spawn more and increase and go past the cap I dont recoment abusing this its plain lag,(villagers have a separate cap however I did not researsch this.
I belive ocelots and iron golems will have separate caps like dogs and chickens too (note snow golems have a separate cap of 16 max)
Hostile mobs dont get afected by how many animals you have so they will spawn as usual
The cap on spawn eggs is a bit higher like 10 cows pigs and shep 26 dogs 26 chicken and about 10 to 16 to 67 mooshroms it varies alot it may be a bug whit mooshrooms
TOTAL CHART for survival:
PIGS:0 to 67 shared by spawning &breeding
Cows:0 to 67 shared by spawning & breeding
Sheep:0 to 67 shared by spawning & breeding
No capshared animals survival:
Wolves:16 by spawning and breeding
chickens: 16 per dimention (overworld, nether & end) by spawning breding and trowing eggs
Mooshroom:16 to 67(or no cap in creative by breeding) I have notified 4jstudios about the animal cap issue whit mooshrooms
Squids: 13 to 26 by spawning (note squid spawn and despawn whit proximity they donot stay like farm animals
Mobs: 80 to 100 whitin player radius and space light level of 7 or less may vary for diferent hostile mobs view the wiki for more in
Villagers:unknow by me but arround 16 to 100 depends on how many villages spawn in your world plus they cant be breeded cause that haves not yet been added.
Note: creative caps not added only survival
Thats all I have hope it helped try this out.

Test made in survival and creative superflat and regular worlds
During offline mode and multy player for MCxbox360:edition.
While I didn't test wolves, mooshrooms, squids, or villagers, or anything in either the nether or the end, I did find similar numbers to yours. Chickens being capped separately from other mobs at 16 I concur with. Using spawn eggs I got that up to 20. Sheep/cows/pigs did seem to share the same spawn cap, however I was able to count 70 of them using breeding and 90 using spawn eggs.
You said you used a creative superflat world with a 19x19 pen. Did you ensure that no other animals were spawned elsewhere in the world? Mine was flooded except for my spawning area and I did two separate fly overs making sure that no animals were spawned except in my spawning area. Also, I used a 50x50 area broken up into 5x5 pens to ensure accurate counting, so that I knew all animals were counted and none had been counted twice.
When I get off work tonight I plan on doing more testing on this. I'm interested in comparing more notes here, as having another person running separate tests gives us better accuracy.
Yes, it would be nice if they would provide some solid confirmation about how it all should work.
My one world still seems to be holding at 50 animals of all types (excepting out squid). I bred a pair of pigs last night to get to 51, but the baby despawned when I went away to hunt for other animals in the world. On that hunt, I only found 1 wolf and killed it; but baby pig was gone when I got back. Both parent pigs were still in the pen.
i agree with chickens have there own cap limit, i dug a 18x18 hole in super flat and filled it with cows, once i got the spawn limit reached (tried sheep, pigs and mooshrooms) i was still able to spawn 16 chickens, didnt try wolves or squid though
I agree that 16 chickens may be a hard cap; but I am counting them in my total of 51 animals. Without them, I'm down to 35 again unable to breed any more; and I only had five pigs before I bred the one pair and got baby that despawned.
Here's my total animal count:
16 chickens (divided over 3 locations on the map)
5 pigs, with despawned baby briefly making 6 (divided over 2 locations on the map)
3 cows (all in one location on the map)
4 tamed dogs (divided over 2 locations on the map)
23 sheep (most in one location on the map, only 2 in a another location) I had tried again last night to breed the 2 sheep in the second location at the same time I bred the baby pig, but was unsuccessful in getting a lamb to appear). (ETA: corrected typo in number)
NO evidence of any other wild animals elsewhere on the map (except squid), save 1 wolf which was killed (but as said before, baby pig had evidently despawned). I have literally scoured my map for trapped animals and am making sure that every cave and sinkhole and ledge I find is altered to enable the animals to move the requisite 20 blocks (and am continuing to do this each night).
i think 35 (without chickens) is way to low, i had alot more cows than that, i will try again but count the cows in
I agree - 35 seems way too low to me as well; but I just can't explain why my world seems to consistently top out at that number and has for the last few months. I suspect it is that, somewhere, there are more animals trapped... but for the life of me I just can't figure out where that is. Prior to TU9, it wasn't an issue since I still had many, many wild animals spawning despite the then 35 total (including chickens) that I had in pens. However, since TU9, all wild spawning seems to have essentially ceased... and only occurs when I bring the penned animal count down to below 35 or 51 (including the chickens).
I agree... after all this mucking about experimenting with this cap for months now, it would be really nice if 4J just fessed up with the rationale behind it and provide the community with some numbers to go with that.
well ive just spawned in 90 cows, ive checked the area and only a few scattered chickens around
only thing i can think off is perhaps theres alot lost down caves an stuff, thats where i found alot of them in my old world
By your use of the word "spawned", I'm thinking that you're in creative and usuing spawn eggs. There could possibly be a separate limit for that. I've in survival and just using breeding. Another thing of note, I thought that after TU10, we were supposed to see a message when we hit the breeding cap. I've yet to see one, although my 2 sheep would not produce a lamb after being bred and my baby pig despawned shortly after being born.
I've bred 89 sheep before. It seems reasonable that the breeding limit is 90 total for pigs, cows and sheep; with 16 being the limit on chickens and wolves, each with their own spawn limit. I'd have to dig up the thread where I was posting my testing results.
Ok it turns out that I was able to breed 89 animals in total. I'm guessing there may be some kind of soft cap on passives at 90.
