I was trying to build a contraption where pistons underneath a water source are to push up the water source causing what i hoped a controlled way to disperse water.. it didnt work. added a block between water source and piston and still doesnt work... the water simply disappears.. is there a work around?

depending on what you want done, you may need to consider using a sticky piston and a block under/in front of the source block, so when triggered, the piston retracts, and allows the water to flow. other than that, i can't see another, simple way to do it.
You cannot push a water block, it is one of those items that will simply break. Instead of pushing the water out of it's gate, why not use the piston as a gate to release the water? Basically, what DMSiafu said
Water, lava, plants, and various other blocks cannot be moved via pistons.
The work-around for this is to have a sticky piston pull a block out of the way, allowing the water to be unblocked and able to flow.
Thanks guys!... I should of wiki'ed it first. :-/ But thanks for the help the release of flow isn't gonna work for what im trying to do since my dimensions weren't built around, needing water. I just came up with it at the end of it. and just assumed it would work.. Thanks!
