Hello. I have been having a ton of fun in my rpg village world. We recently made a courthouse to figure out who was at fault for a feud between two players constantly killing eachother.
The only problem ive been having is creepers. I will kill them easily, but some of the people just walk around the village setting them off on my buildings/roads. i usually kick people if they keep doing this without repairing the damage. But its fun to have a lot of people in your world.
So ive tried light posts everywhere, i think tourches all over the ground looks tacky.
What have you guys found most affective in creeper defence?
Making the walkways out of a single half-slab will prevent anything from spawning on those blocks.
As for the rest you either need to hide the lighting out of regular view (behind buildings, between a lot of tall grass, etc.) as best as you can.
Creepers usually start walking towards you from about 11 blocks I think.
That means if you can keep 11 blocks away and closer to the path anyone should get a fair warning before they attract the attention of a creeper.
I also use snow golems they will hold back creepers and slowly kill them.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.

Snow golems dont actually cause damage, they just take the attention away from the player. So if that said golem is wandering on the ground and hits a creeper with a snowball, there's another hole for you to fill in.
make a 3 block thick wall around the area... With the middle being obsidian. That way at least you know where to repair on your wall. Also on the outside and the inside have at least a 2 wide moat running the wall edges so the damage done is reduced to the walls. As well the wall, just make sure things are well lit up wether it is lamp posts, torches, glowstone, or pumpkins.
I always use a combination of the 4 since the actual lanterns are not in yet. I decorate them to look good. Lighting with torches I tend to play with shadows quite often, so that the torches are barely seen, but still there. Same with pumpkins & glowstone to some degree.
As for the wall itself that is just a minimum width, as I personally like to decorate that too so it does not look so bland. My walkways do consist of half slabs and full blocks, but usually along those I have quite a bit of lighting. bushes that are lit by pumpkins also works a lot to add that garden look around the place.
Hopefully I can get my wall up before creepers decide to settle in from the nearby cave under the town that leads to a ravine. lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I do a few things, some have been mentioned, some have not.
Use halfslab floors all over the place
Make Walls or Fences- On the edge of most of my builds I elevate the platform I am building on one block. Then I place one more block, or a fence, around the top. This keeps a 2 block wall for them. This does not prevent them, it just keeps them at bay and usually gives me a heads up a creeper is near by and I should pic em off.
Torches EVERYWHERE... even to the point of ugly. I tend to lean towards ugly if it means creeper free.
If you don't want those fugly torches placed everywhere, use Glowstone hidden under a glass block. I usually use this for walkways & flooring. I find it looks better than torches, or visible Glowstone.
actually no. obsidian and bedrock they can not destroy. unlike ghasts in the nether, they have even less mostly stone. But creepers can not destroy those 2 for sure.:D

All blocks have a "blast resistance" of sorts. Blocks like sand and dirt have next to none, so if you explode anything on them, their gone. Things like stone, cobblestone, and endstone (not yet in the game) have a pretty high blast resistance, and all blocks but the ones that their right on top of or right next to will be safe.
The only two creeper proof materials are bedrock (which is indestructable...period) and obsidian. Thats why obsidian is a popular buiding material, even if not showing.
Awesome ideas and replies dudes thank you.
I really like the glowstone under glass idea. Ive been putting one peice in the middle of 9 road pieces.
Anyone wanna check out what i got add me.
Thick walls of cobblestone are cheap and easy to create and fix; even smooth stone and stone brick walls are. The thing is that creepers can only blast through one layer of stone at a time. So if your wall is three blocks thick, three creepers need to explode at the same spot to breach the wall. Rather unlikely to happen unless you're extremely unlucky.
Half slab roads are a great idea as well. At least it reduces the area where creepers and other mobs can spawn by some amount and allows for "dark alleys" in your town. Aside from that, light is always your best friend.

actually why would any build a 3 thick cobble wall, kinda redundant. having obsidian in the middle reduces the second attempt to 0, as they would not be able to get through, even when they explode...

This may be handy. It's part of Vanilla Minecraft, so it's perfectly legitimate. Creepers still do damage on players, however they do not destroy blocks. This is nice for servers because it is not possible to keep creepers from going boom. The more people, the more booms, no matter what.

Oh crud, I clicked in off the main page and didn't read that part.
My apologies. The best thing you could do is use plenty of lights, enclose your towns/villages with fencing, and Number One, the most successful way to keep creeper damage down, is to be extremely selective in who you allow to play on the server. Simply only let people who are respectful of others and of the MC landscape to have a play on your server. They will do their best to keep creepers from booming, and they will fix any creeper damage immediately after it occurs. =)

Several reasons.
Some people (like me) dislike "editting" their survival worlds in creative mode, and mining enough obsidian for multiple large structures is a really, REALLY lengthy process. Not to mention that you're going to use quite a few diamonds for pickaxes.
If a creeper blows up the outer layer of a wall, you're going to have to fix it anyway, even if only for cosmetical reasons. So there's really not much difference between fixing one layer or two ... or three, in the worst case.
Speaking of which, it's EXTREMELY unlike that three creepers will blow up at the same spot before you can fix the damage. If it happens, it's usually not just somewhere at a wall but at gates where there's a higher traffic of players. And unless the gate is just an undecorated hole in the wall, most of the damage the creepers do will be to structures that aren't made of obsidian.
Rearranging pure stone walls is much faster than walls with an obsidian core. Towns tend to grow, new buildings are added, etc.

Is it a chicken or is it a duck? - It's a chuck, because dicken sounds stupid.

Most people using a lot of obsidian in builds do so by creating a 'mold' out of blocks and filling it with lava, you then pour water over and voila! Instant obsidian, no diamonds required just some buckets.
@OP, The only thing I could suggest is to fence in your roads and keep the roads well lit, the creepers won't blow up if they can't get at the people, you could just add gates along the fence (and maybe some kind of automatic opener/closers) to allow access to the buildings along it.

Stay fluffy~
