I've been trying to make a XP farm but instead i make useless buildings that dont do anything?I kind of know how to make one but not really sure how to make one so can someone give me a better explanation of an XP farm or maybe a better system of making a XP farm?

Depends on what kind of xp farm? Mob farm? Mob spawner? Complicated? Simple?

If you have a blaze spawn in the nether, I suggest this simple design.

Also make sure that you cover enough space vertically. Spawners can spawn enemies in any empty block, up to 8 blocks away horizontally.

Either make a big enough room or make the outside of the room a few blocks thick so enemies can't spawn outside the farm.

Easiest without building anything is get some fire resist potion and go head first into a blaze spwaner, you're practically invincible. Or with a mob spawner I prefer just making a square room water pushing them in hole that has a block and a piston underneath and a block and a piston above and suffocate them.... You gotta hit them before they suffocate. Hit them with anything, a porkchop if you want and itll give you the XP as long as you touch them within like 5 sec of them dying. I did this crappy recording prior to XP so I didn't hit them but you'll get the idea.

The generalized mob traps of old (e.g. mob drop traps) aren't working as well as they once did. Since the addition of ravines and mineshafts, the underground has just so many dark holes in it that it's difficult to get the mobs to spawn inside the traps. Lighting up the adjacent caves to increase the spawn rates in the traps has become a real chore!

The better alternative now is to find a mob spawner and build a spawn trap. The design of the trap will vary depending on what sort of mob the spawner spawns. There are several tutorials on YouTube and many of them are not that complicated to make.

My mob grinder I built doubles as my XP farm. It's Ethos practical mob system with a 3x3 hole instead of a one block hole (tO prevent jamming. I built 6 layers. Under the bottom layer I built a tube the mobs drop down to the killing floor. About 7 blocks from the bottom of the mob grinder I put a water source held up by signs for the mobs to fall through. This resets their fall distance, I then went 21 blocks down from there with the tube made the last little bit out of obsidian because of creepers and voila you have a mob grinder/XP farm/ record generator. Lvl 30 in under 5 mins.

Perfecting my current xp farm and will be recording it for Youtube. If you don't wanna wait then you can always look up Etho or Monkeyfarm, as they both have great Xp farms.
