My roomate just bought the xbox version of minecraft, and made a bed. It worked fine for a while, but now there is not a use button and she can't get into her bed at night. She tried making another bed, destroying the original bed and setting it up again, setting it in a different spot, etc, and it's still not letting her sleep through the night. Restarting the game didn't do anything.
I believe, however, that the aggro mob must actively tracking you. I have gone to bed numerous times while hearing spiders chirping and zombies groaning.
what this means is that you cannot stay out after dark and go running for your bed to "reset" the aggro mobs at the first hint of danger.

Ah, the game doesn't really explain any of this that I've seen, unlike the "You cannot sleep during the day" message. I've often been safe in my shelter with a bed, but had to sit there until dawn... Now I know why. So that's considered cheating or something if you try to sleep with angry monsters outside? Does it help if you make a bigger house? My beds are often right up against the wall.
I've never had a problem with it, in beta 1.6 I remember that you could use the beds whenever but if there were mobs around they'd just attack you and knock you out of the bed. With the TU7 though there is some sort of block update glitch that won't allow you to use beds or blocks to be mined, so can you mine blocka without them reappearing? And if they do reappear try to leave the area (100 away or so?) Maybe more maybe less, however much is needed to unload the chunk. Saving and restarting the game or xbox does nothing because whatever is causing the glitch is something that gets saved in the file.. Try this and see if it helps and get back to us and let us know.

With the problem I've seen, it is indeed temporary. Later the bed works fine. I don't have a repro ready at the moment. It just happenes now and then. My current issue is the blocks reappearing thing on another thread
It just doesn't make sense... if they can't do anything to me while I stand in the house until morning, why is it unsafe to sleep in the bed until morning? Grr!
Why are you sleeping in the first place? Man up, grab your sword and start killing things. I find beds completely useless in Minecraft apart from the checkpoint.

nope... doesn't matter if tracking or not. Just if any are nearby. Also it means even if they are not outside where you are sleeping, there must be a cave below you to cause this. I know at the moment it stinks for the latter reason mainly. It is not a matter of grabbing a sword and going out to kill the mobs affecting sleep, but a matter of finding the hidden mobs under the earth that you can not see. that is the part the renders the bed useless in the game.
there are sometimes small pockets of air, little tiny chambers if you will, that seem to spawn many at times. I've had problems with this and don't like the way they went about it. It is all about proximity which causes a lot of problems. I wouldn't mind if it was in a nearby cave or just flat out near the place, but under you or in a place you have to dig in order to get to them... This is what causes the beds to have no meaning what so ever, and hence useless. why have the ability to use a bed if by the time you find these hidden places it would be daybreak. *shakes head* That is like saying you should never make a bed in the first place cause you will have no chance to sleep.
i like the feature, but needs some work that is for sure...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Although it isn't supposed to be a bug it seems to be very buggy, as I have slept with active mobs outside myself. Yet, sometimes, I'm not able to sleep with them outside.
I sleep with active monsters outside all the time. The only time I ever had a problem with it was the one time I stayed out too late and attracted the attention of a creeper while lacking a sword. I ran back to my hovel and couldn't sleep while the creeper was right outside my door.
If it is only proximity-based, then the test radius is fairly small, less than 20 blocks I'd guess. My hovel is burrowed into the side of a small cliff that is no more than 20 blocks high at its highest point. I regularly have spiders and whatnot walking around on top of the cliff with no adverse effects.
I am sure it is small, as I have had problems with something being apparently 10 blocks away, that I could not see. Only found this small enclosed space when I decided to dig in a certain direction. That solved my bed sleeping problem. It is not a very big proximity. I mean I wouldn't think it being 20, more like 10-14 maybe less. never truly tested it.
The only thing I know for sure is that the mobs do not need to be tracking you to not sleep. As far as the distance is concerned that is a pretty heafty speculation. Funny thing is I put a bed like 7-8 block under the house I was in, and I could always sleep...O_o yet where that small enclave was with where my bed was originally just doesn't make sense.
Unless mobs can track through walls.. that is the only thing... even though I am sure tracking has nothing to do with it... although would be nice if it was. Then I wouldn't have to worry about that. Figured out the desert is full of these small enclaves, so I would suggest to anyone that bedding in a desert, even on the surface, is a bad idea. You would end up with the same problem that I have had for a bit.

They are saying a monster has to be tracking you. I say it shouldn't matter if you are safe. If they actually hit you, yeah you should wake up. But if they are going to prevent you from sleeping, they should at least provide a message saying why.
Yeah, in the PC version of Minecraft, it says "You can't sleep now because monsters are nearby" but in the Xbox360 version, it doesn't show that, even with game-hints enabled.

Yeah, I would expect it to be much smaller than 20 blocks, I was highballing.
I will say that it is very true that monsters can track through walls even if they don't react to you the way they normally would. the easiest way to prove this is to spend an evening in the tavern or library of a village and intentionally attract and aggro mob's attention. They will move around the edges of the building to get as close as possible to you regardless of whether there is a window they can see through or not.
Regardless, the big issue is the lack of a tip explaining why it's happening. that alone would help newer players understand when they're experiencing a bug versus actual game play features.

cRookie, this is a game feature decision to prevent players from using sleeping as a "reset" button on aggro mobs. Since sleeping actually skips time, sleeping through the night prevents mobs from spawning at night (they don't have time to spawn, notice that you wake up well after the sun is up and any mobs that did have a chance to spawn are burning). I presume the PC game designers chose it to be this way to prevent players from staying up half the night, killing aggro mobs, and then (when things got too hard) running home and skipping the rest of the night. It primarily prevents players from controlling the creeper population.

I know that there are monsters outside.
That's why I'm trying to use this bed to at least set my spawn before I go out there and get murdered.
But you might not know that's why you can't go to sleep. That's the problem. I knew there were monsters outside too. There usually are.
Also not everyone wants to fight monsters all the time. People should be able to play the game how they want (@Blazen)
