I found a cool little enchantment decoder that you type in the symbol and it tells you the word in english, only problem even though they are in english the word still don't make sense. So how can I know what it is? Or is it random?
It is random. According to the Wiki, the coding is a 'galactic' code, I think. There are about 50 something words, that the code actually makes. You can decipher the coding, to get these words, but even IF you do, they are random.
Eg, one word may decipher to 'sponge' . . but this word may appear on a number of enchantments (looting, sharpness etc)
There is no way of knowing what you will get.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. . . or feel free to paste the Wiki wording in.
Enchantment names are randomly constructed from the following list of words. Three to five words are chosen from the list and appended to each other, then displayed in the Standard Galactic Alphabet. Note that the names have no meaning and are not saved on the enchanted item (meaning they will tell you nothing about what the resulting spell will be), and they are only displayed in the Enchantment Table. The following list of words contain all the possible enchantment words after deciphering.
the elder scrolls klaatu berata niktu xyzzy bless curse light darkness fire air earth water hot dry cold wet ignite snuff embiggen twist shorten stretch fiddle destroy imbue galvanize enchant free limited range of towards inside sphere cube self other ball mental physical grow shrink demon elemental spirit animal creature beast humanoid undead fresh stale

This is one of the few things in the game that really is stupid. I can not count the number of times I saved and then had to reload over and over and over and over etc again becauxe the enchantments were terrible. I mean if you spend the time earning the 20+ levels you should at least be able to know what you are going to get instead of that non-sense. There are very few problems with this game (excluding the occasional bug), but this one is.
Agree. Especially when you do a level 30 enchantment on a diamond pick, and get efficiency 1. . . . soooo annoying.
At least we're luckier than the PC version. They don't have the chance to exit without saving do they? Meaning they're stuck with what they get?
I don't know about that... They can back up the file and then just re-enter from that point on...O_o
I actually don't mind the randomness to it. Although what you stated does make sense. Would be nice to get mainly a better chance at higher level enchants for more levels you put into it.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I think most pc games just save and load like this one. Its still probably annoying to them too. This game is a great game, but sometimes these little things add up to something really annoying.

I agree that it's a stupid feature; but I can actually think of several things in the game that seem equally stupid... like the randomness of painting selection, particularly when it comes to needing a certain size. It seems to me that Notch takes some pleasure in needlessly frustrating the players of his game.
You can also un-enchant by placing an enchanted item into a minecart chest and breaking it. You still get the minecart and the chest back, along with your now un-enchanted tool.

Cool. It still doesn't get the wasted XP back, but at least you don't wind up with a chestful of Silk Touch diamond pickaxxes.

It's annoying since it takes forever to exit a game and reload it. I got an efficiency III for a 30 level pickaxe, and that was just nonsense.
I will say I must have some kind of mad skill leveling up. I can go from 0 - 30 in about 15 minutes. All I need is either to go mining for diamond and redstone or just go fight monsters. Usually I just slaughter all of the animals when I am low and then slaughter all of the monsters when I am over level 16.
Has anyone noticed that enchantments arent going up to level 30 anymore too? I cant seem to get anything above level 26. They are still quite powerful at 26, but I had been getting some at 30. I am around I think 14 bookcases so I dont think thats the problem.
Before I switched maps I had a efficient IV and unbreaking III diamond pickaxe. I really want to get another one like that.
I like it. Sure it get annoying but i think mojang thought the supprise would be the fun of it. And it is. But i never heard of a level 30 enchant giving efficiency 1. I dont mind it. And i dont think the devs. thought people would complain.

i get 30 on my table. I think theres a certan ammount you can putt and then crap happens. As in bookshelves.
Actually, the symbols are exactly the same for each enchant-example:
Unbreaking 3(The one I always need) may translate to Fire Eating Peanut, But It is always will be Fire Eating Peanut as the translation for Unbreaking 3, always. Hope that that helps all you mine crafters out there. No more wasting you diamond tools and armor!
I think it's great that the game has a totally random aspect like this to it although you can just save your game, exit and try again if you don't get what you want.

Would save me a lot of hassle. Lol

Exactly.
I really don't mind the randomness. I would just like a 'reward' for spending 4 hours mob killing. Lol
As for the back up thing. I was kinda guessing. Lol. I suppose they could back up files. Much like we can I suppose.

At least it's easier than throwing the tool away, crafting a new one, getting the XP, and enchanting it again.
