So as far as I'm concerned, this last update brought TWO things:
1) Breeding
2) Enchanting and Brewing
Breeding seems useless, though. My animals always disappear whenever I walk like 30 blocks away from them, for no apparent reason. This is on a brand new world, by the way.
And Enchanting and Brewing just helps you fight stuff and mine stuff, so it just makes doing stuff more efficient. The only real game-changing thing in the update is Breeding, and it doesn't even work.
What is the point of breeding? MCXBLA is E10+ yet they have animals making dirty love. And all it does is make more annoying animals that make my ears bleed.
Can baby animals even grow? I started a "breeding empire" world where I planned on making a sheep breed station for each colour wool, I Have the dyes but the baby sheep wont grow

They have PG-13 movies and they show sex scenes. Plus, I don't think hearts coming out of virtual animals is dirty love.

Planned the same thing and had the sheep and dyes, only thing is the sheep disappear. I also have farm pens with everysingle other animal and those DO NOT despawn no matter what

Not a clue, guess you need to find a lot of adults first then, as the colours do persist from adults to the babies they make, not sure which colour take priority on a mixed pairing or if it defaults to white mind.

From the wiki on breeding colored sheep:
Sheep can be bred with wheat. If the parents have 'compatible' wool colors (meaning that the corresponding dye items could be combined into a third dye color), the resulting lamb will be a mix of their colors (e.g., blue sheep + white sheep = light blue lamb). Otherwise, the lamb will be the same color as one of the parents, chosen at random.

Breeding and animals in general seem to be pretty broken at the moment. When it all gets fixed, the use and importance of breeding will become much more apparent.
I've noticed with my newer worlds after this update, that I probably don't even need to breed or keep any. I had started this one seed, and even after getting 2 chickens penned, i had 3 cows spawn in it. I seperated them, bred them. And then I just started getting massive amounts of cows, chickens, sheep, pigs. etc. (not in the pen, just the rest of the 50 block area or so around my place)
I haven't even killed the ones in the pen for meat because of the shear number on the outside.
I don't even bother with breeding at the moment, due to the mass amount of mobs that spawn around my house, constantly. Each day I go round and kill them all, and end up with 10-20 of each meat, except chicken.
Once it's updated, I guess I'll have to use the breeding thing. Which will in turn save me a lot of hassle each day.
Breeding is good because you don't have to worry about running out of food you don't need to travel far what is wrong with breeding ???????
Nothing is 'wrong' with breeding, when it works.. . .read the bugs thread.
My point is that, at the moment, animals are spawing in the normal way. In otherwords, you can walk out of your house, and there'll be cows, sheep, pigs etc there, without the need of breeding.
If I remember right, when 4J 'fix' this, animals will no longer 'spawn', so you will need to breed them.
Right now I think breeding is pretty useless because of the shear number of animals that spawn.
Why spend the time building and running a farm when every animal is within 100 blocks.
When they no longer respawn then it will be essential.
An underground farm in your mine is nice to have though.
And what did the op mean by "the only real game changing thing in the update"?
Xp, enchanting, brewing.....pretty big game changers.

I see your thread and I raise you the exact same thread.
My sheep don't seem to regrow their wool yet. I guess that is in a future update? Can still save my dyes by breeding since the lambs seem to usually take the color of the parent that I feed. Also, sheared sheep seem to be sterile, so have to breed them before hand!
I have not had any of my captured animal poof on me, that I have noticed. But the 2 wild roaming mooshrooms has vanished without a trace and no new ones have spawned. I checked the ocean around the island, no sign of them. As far as I know, they don't have any unique resource, so it wont hinder my world any that they are gone. But still a bit of a bummer.
What I really hate is the constant panicy crying and leaping against the fences from my domestic animals. Holy tapdancing Santa, please calm the animals down in a future patch. I want my flock to be peacefully roaming adound, eating grass, occationally letting out a baaa(or oink, bock or moo). Right now they are acting like I threw in a pack of wolves in there with them.

I agree. I can put my animals in a 100x100 fenced-in area, and they'll just hop against the fence constantly, instead of walking around in the 10,000 square block field.
ALL of my animals disappear. And I started a new world and everything. I even double-stacked the fences surrounding the animals, and made three fences surrounding each other! So they're not dying, and they're not escaping. They're just disappearing.
A while ago, I just got finished breeding some animals. In my pen, I had 4 adult cows, 2 baby cows, 3 adult pigs, 1 baby pig, and 1 chicken. I left the pen to go check on my mushrooms, which were about 40 blocks away. I came back, and the only thing left in the pen was a single adult sheep.

Explain this to me.

Just 'pointless' at the moment.
