I'm having a negative return on my semi-automatic wheat farm. It takes just over 2 stacks of seeds to plant, but I only get back a stack and 58 seeds, and about a stack and 12 wheat.
I have checked and made sure that I am getting every seed that grows, I make sure that all of it is fully grown, and I have thought and thought about what is going on.
I have come up with nothing.
Anyone have any ideas. It's not a very good farm at the moment.-_-
buddy, I hate to brake it to you but when broken with water, wheat plants don't always drop seeds, sorry... that's y u sud NEVER make auto wheat farms, only melon and pumpkin
I've made pleanty of auto wheat farms before and always have gotten a positive return.
Also all the youtubers use auto wheat farms and why would they use them if they didn't work.
Edit:just to make sure I went to the wiki. The only thing it says about differences with harvesting wheat from hand or by water is "If water flows in, wheat and seeds are dropped as if the crop had been harvested by hand."
I checked the wheat page, the automatic farming page, and the wheat farming page.
The maximum drops (the floating things you get when you press B ) in a world is about 200 or so. Sorry, but you'll have to make it much smaller or do one lane at a time.

This makes sense, although I can remember before the 1.8 update I was using a sand generator, and I had a whole inventory of sand on the ground. My game was lagging so much that i was afraid it would crash.

It's not a bug necessarily... Every item or mob is called an entity. With the way the game's engine works, only x number of entities will stay spawned, where x is some integer value (I think like 100 usually). If the game exceeds x entities that are spawned, it will start to despawn them. In your case, you are spawning to many entities of wheat and seeds which is causing them to despawn. As another member has suggested, you should automate the farm in sections rather than all at once.
makes me wonder if it is something I mentioned in the bug thread while back... Where water destroys some item entities randomly. Of course I would have thought that they would have fixed that by now... hmm..
Between that and what everyone else mentioned that could be why... Just a possibility.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Well I only planted one side and it worked so the entities things the reason, now I must delay one side enough for me to pick up all of the other side before it let's the water go

Oh if that's the case then I hope it gets fixed.
Is it reported?
