Actually Apples have a small percent chance to drop from leaves. The massive trees which are 2x2 trunk have about 2 stacks of leaves for a canopy before you hit the first 'branch' of wood. Today I went from about 25 apples to well over 80, most of it came in the 2 hours I spent chopping down and replanting these trees and make 2 stacks of 64 each for 8 ovens. In other words I did 16 stacks of 64 charcoal and smelted alot of cobblestone and now I have several double chests full of stone and stone brick So I say it significantly increases the chance of obtaining apples. Sometimes, for one massive tree I get about 10 apples.
Considering the way these trees can grow under current coding is just because they ignore the presense of leaves from the same type of tree when checking for growth space but they will still share canopy (and also of course cant put canopyy in the other trunks) thats an impossibility.
For those of you who want pictures, give me a day or so to find my phone-computer usb cord. I misplaced quite a bit when I moved. For example I have a digital camera and have no idea where it is.
Edit: Found the cord to my phone! Also found the cord, charger and user manual for my pentax digital camera, but I have no idea where my camera is. In the meantime I hope the driver for this phone still works, have to wait for it to install before I can upload pictures. I could also go online if you people want to see these trees for yourself?
This is for 1 version of an automatic treefarm, I have build a pretty complicated one on xbox in creative that is pretty nice but the simpler ones generally work better/faster.
The automated tree stacker sucks for collecting drops as most of the canopy fails to grow with most of those designs.
My preferred method is a ring (5x5) of dirt floating above a water powered drop collector. Plant saplings around the ring, and then harvest the wood. All the the drops from the leaves fall below to a single collection point. If anyone wants to see this I can post some screenshots but it's a pretty simple idea.
One trick to getting Oak trees to grow close together is to clear all blocks directly above the sapling.
