It wont grow in the overworld as far as I know. It does grow fairly fast in the nether though, just hang around the fortress and kill some blaze while you wait for it to grow.
It will not grow in the nether when you are in the overworld, unless you are playing on a server (in my experience). The stuff grows much faster if it is growing near fire, and will be able to grow in the overworld under the same conditions.

No, it will not. You'll have to stick around in the Nether if you want those warts nice & plump for the picking... errr, or punching.
