I have a single player survival world right now. I have two simple rules in the world for myself.
I will never cheat and switch to Creative
I will keep the difficulty on hard no matter what.
So today I decided I wanted to make some potions. So I got into my Nether portal to find a Nether Fortress. I went into the Nether before, but only for a few minutes to get Glowstone and Soul Sand. I never really explored the entire thing.
After around an hour in the nether I have decided there are no Nether Fortresses. I checked every corner of the Nether and even made a map and filled it completely in. There are no Nether Fortresses.
So here is what I'm asking, do you think I should cheat? If I do cheat, I will only give myself Blaze Rods, Nether Wart and enough Nether Brick to last awhile. After that I would switch back to survival. But that would mean I cheated and kind of ruined the point of the world. Do you think I should do it or not?
If you switch then why not spawn in other stuff...either way it shows you've been in creative so just find a new seed if you don't want to cheat, but then again, you'd have to do this next update hah
Im having a similar issue.. My blaze spawners wont appear (i have coordinates to them from the seed list) and apparently, you have to go on creative to geth them to spawn. Idk what to do either..

Lol what? I found my own seed with pretty much everything and my blaze monsters spawn normally from the monster spawner.
I honestly don't think this is a question to look to other people to answer. Really its a personal debate, and it all boils down to what you consider cheating and what you don't.
Now, as for your issue with nether wart/netherbrick/blaze/wither I can think of a few options:
First, you could back up your world and use one copy completely legit, the other you would be almost legit
(if you don't know how to do this, open the texture folder to access your .minecraft then copy the world save from the saves folder. if you're into modding then you'll know more efficient methods, but this is an easy way for the layman to get there)
Second, you'll need to download MC Edit, and possibly play around a bit to get the hang of it, but you can use MC Edit to move the most important pieces of your world to another minecraft world with a better seed. (I won't explain how to do this as it is a bit much to gulp down at once, but you can find videos on YouTube for it. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/13807-mcedit-minecraft-world-editor-now-open-source/
Finally, you could always look into using a mod that creates new methods of obtaining these items, but you might not be interested in modding, and it is a bit of an undertaking at first.

Sorry my friend, but this section is for the XBLA version of Minecraft. However, I do agree with that first little paragraph. It's your game and your world, you make your own rules. If you consider the act you're contemplating to be some sort of cheat, then that's what it is. If you believe it's okay to use creative mode to give yourself unobtainable items, then go for it. We can't really give you a clear answer in a "yes or no" format.
It's not cheating if you're just using it to get what your world doesn't have. It's not even cheating, really. Cheating insinuates you're either taking advantage of a glitch (like in Skyrim, getting that chest under Skyforge in Whiterun) or like ABBAABBAABBAA for Aladdin on Sega Genesis to skip levels. It all comes down to one question: How much do you care about the leaderboards? Switching to Creative, even once, shuts them off for you for that seed. Is that worth it to you to have blaze rods, nether wart and nether bricks? If you do create another seed, then you'll have to build stuff all over again. Rebuilt everything to have blaze rods, nether wart and nether bricks or just switch to creative mode for them and have leaderboards turned off? Which seems better to you?
You win. I'm giving myself those three items right now.
Well now that I cheated and gave my self blaze rods, I decided something. I'll do the same challenge of hard mode and no creative when the next update is out and start a new world.
Damn, I've tried loading the seed again in creative 5 times and no blazes at all. Also, the spawn point keeps changing, I thought those were permanent?
The spawn point And blaze spawners can change! I'm 100% sure on that!!
How much do you care about the leader boards? Switching to Creative, even once, shuts them off for you for that seed.
Dose that mean is you play a world in creative then create a whole new world with the same seed that you used for your creative game you will still have the leader board shut off for that world evan though you have not play the new world in creative mode but becouse you used the same seed as you used for your creative game.

So today I decided I wanted to make some potions...
Are making potions necessary to your "survival" in this game?... or is making them just something you want to do? On a basic level, true survivalism means making do with what you have and doing without whatever you haven't got... and accepting that you're not going to have everything you want.
How you define "survival" is what is going to determine whether or not you personally consider going into creative mode at this point "cheating" or not. It's your single player world, so you make your own rules. If you feel that you're letting yourself down by going into creative now, don't do it. Hump it out until you feel you're done with that world, then start a new seed and make a new challenge for yourself.

Well I really did want potions just to play around with them. And I'm not worried about survival anymore. I already have enchanted diamond armor without cheating at all.

I think your biggest problem is that you're bouncing back and forth about what you want to do like a ping pong ball...and that makes you sound like a raging hypocrite. Make a commitment to yourself and then strive to live up to that commitment. That way, you won't be letting yourself down all the time (i.e cheating yourself). Fact of the matter is that the rest of us really shouldn't care what you do in your own world.

Third, I believe the program AMIDST can find Nether Fortresses, but I'm not certain.

This seed has worked well for me (I have left a good portion of it un explored for future changes in the game that might need to be generated).
Seed = smudge
I have my survival world in TU6, so I have no Fortress already, and I refuse to spawn myself in Creative to get items.
Stay fluffy~

Had been playing it everyday, now that I did that, I've had no interest to play. Sort of killed it for me.
