I have a world where I play on nothing but survival mode and keep the difficulty on hard all the time.
So I was looking for a Mineshaft to start a melon farm, because that's the only place you can get Melon seeds. But I simply could not find a mineshaft. So I got annoyed and decided to make an Xray machine. (It was the kind with pistons and TNT.) So I used the Xray machine to find a mineshaft and found some Melon seeds. But I've been thinking, would you consider that cheating? Because I took advantage of a glitch
If you have a survival world that you play nothing but Hard mode on, I have no reason at all to call you a cheater. Taking advantage of a glitch isn't like duping to me. Sure, you could've found that mineshaft on your own, but who knows how long it would've taken. It'd be no different than if you were in the desert and you had a map that pointed you in the direction of water. You still have to make the trip to get the water yourself. Thats how I see it.
Not really. I mean if you're generating a world after the Tu7 update, you're not guaranteed to get a Mineshaft let alone Melon seeds. You may as well X-ray the land so as not to waste your time in a broken seed.
First of all glitching ≠ cheating.
Second of all, Minecraft is a sandbox game, which basically means that you can do whatever you want! There is no cheating in Minecraft. Rather it's the rules you make for yourself that create boundaries.
Why.. Omg people nobody cares if you play on creative then play survival or visa versa Its not like they going to go to your house and beat your face for playing survival then switching to Creative to get something or use some sort of xray glitch. Its not like you gotto hide yo kids hide yo wife hide everything (hide yo kids video reference there lmao) anyways yes nobody cares if you cheat or not nobody will ever find out unless you tell everybody -.-

Can somebody change this message into something my brain can process?
You need to ask yourself. Do you feel like you cheated yourself? If so, then you cheated. If you can say "I looked for ages, and tried my very best, but I do need to exploit a glitch that was built into the game (Intentional or not)" Then you didn't cheat.
As one of the above said. MC is a sandbox game. There are no rules. There is no ending. Yet. No one to tell you what you can or cannot do.
I 'cheated' before now, by loading different seeds to look for a decent one. Or, exiting the game and reloading when I'm not happy with my enchanted item. Or exiting without saving when I fell into lava. (Duh!)
X-ray glitch is still in the PC version, been there since pistons came out, if the developers felt like it was cheating I'm sure it would have been removed by now. My two cents, I play Minecraft to have fun with the game mechanics, in my eyes if you can use the game mechanics to your advantage then you sir are winning. However there are exceptions doing these things on say a hunger games I consider cheating and unfair to the other players.
Minecraft is interpreted the way you want. You play the way you want. So as long as you don't think it is cheating then it is not. Each individual will always have their own answer to this, as there are a lot of people in the world.
Personally using an x-ray glitch is not cheating, and like someone else mentioned you still have to get to that point where what you are locating is. This glitch is nothing like the dupe thing which I actually consider cheating, especially when creative is out..O_o
It is all about how you want to play the game. If you feel too guilty about it, then it is possible that you are cheating or at least to yourself you are. Or just flat out worried too much about what others might thing if you did something like that. After all it is a pretty open ended game that you play the way you want not play the way everyone else wants...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Personally I view using any item in a way that the developers did not intend to be cheating. There is something called "Bug Abuse" and I have seen people banned from Xbox Live for abusing it in Online Multiplayer games.
>>>HOWEVER!!<<<
I don't see anything wrong with using it in Minecraft. Glitches in single player games are never a huge deal at all, and this glitch isn't even bad.
This is how I think of it. You built something with YOUR knowledge to help yourself. The glitch isn't fixed, therefore you should be able to take advantage of it. It's not cheating, maybe a tad cheap, but not cheating.

I, myself, would probably consider this cheating. I would consider it cheating mainly because it is an unnatural way to find things. Don't be too hard on yourself though because it can be really hard to find structures in some worlds because I know when we got the TU6 update I was bummed that I couldn't find melons, mineshafts, strongholds, or villages but I kept on searching for the adventure of the game. Now the newest problem is finding nether fortress so I now I will probably dig through netherrack and possibly use some tnt to find a fortress. If I feel that it is almost impossible to find it I will use the glitch but I've never purposefully used a glitch on Minecraft before.
Duping and X-ray are both taking advantage of a glitch. if you consider one to be cheating, the other should be considered cheating as well. That said, when you're in your own world, you should be able to play the game your way. When you are playing in someone else's world, then anything they don't want to allow would be cheating in that world. Their world, their rules.
Yes and No - Yes your exployting a known glitch that helped you move forward in the game = cheat. But then No - it's your own world and your only cheating yourself since you mentioned you only play survival in hard mode. So your proud that you can survive in this mode but had to cheat to conitue playing.
Play the game the way you want to play the game. As others have mentioned. The only one that cares if you switch mode in the middle of the game is you.

Only joking.

I actually consider that cheating.
That's really all I have to say. But why are you worried about 'cheating' if you're on a singleplayer server?
Just a thought...
But to start you off with a warning, a public server's a different story.
