I went on the minecraft wiki and looked up the enchanting letters. I spelled out 'silk touch' to get mycelium from the mushroom biome I found. Next thing I noticed was when I wanted to enchant my spade, I couldn't find it. So I ended up doing a lucky pick and ended up with unbreaking III.
Any help please?
As far as I know, the enchanting letters are just for show, they dont actually determine what enchantment you are going to get. Yes, there is silk touch, but the enchantments are completely random so you're just gonna have to keep trying.
The lettering is indeed for show, unless 4J changed that, but that is unlikely the case. Maybe in the future maybe. I like the way it is, although if what the above post is saying is true, that means they brought forward the most recent enchanting where silk touch is extremely rare... hm.... disheartening as I don't want to waste precious building materials or special ores to attempt 30 and get only 1 at the last moment. For me the way my chances of getting things seems to be on the bad side. it might take 1000 before I would get one..><
I don't know that for sure, but those letters is a language like the wiki says, however they are more like random names and words that were put in to create even more mystery to the enchant. or mysticalness if there is such a word...lol That is how I see it.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
that stinks... that makes it not even worth it... wish they had a way to make some of the various materials, like cob web and the fortress and stonghold stuff...(cracked and mossy that is) as well mossy cobble. would be nice if you can make webs, and then combine that with regular bricks(stone bricks) to make the cracked one, and maybe mix grass(not the block but actual tall grass) with it to make mossy variations... that would be an idea.
I know it doesn't work on webs right now, but I know they might add that. ice will more likely be in the next update. but so far it is not worth my time to attempt so many tries for something I would use normally just to cut the time down on mining smooth stone. totally not worth it for that. it is a keep sake at the moment not a enchanted tool at that frequency...><

Yes. I'm not even finding it all that rare... I've got three pickaxes with it so far (combined with some different other enchantments). I'm not really finding it all that useful though.

I'm finding the same situation. My last 3 picks have all been Silk Touch. I don't think it's all that rare. I guess it's just the luck of the draw.
You can always save, then enchant your tool. If you don't like what you get, just exit w/o saving, re-load the world and enchant again.
Get what you want every time.
I myself just don't like it that way.... to me the defeats the purpose of random. i'm sure I'll get one eventually when I play, but for now it is to survive..:D

To be honest, I don't really see the benefits of Silk Touch anyway. There just doesn't seem to be any really useful purpose for it.
The only benefit that I can find is that you can carry more breakable ores such as Redstone and Lapis since you can bring them back in block form. But, then you still have to re-mine them when you get them back which is just a pain.
If you're a builder, then you can get Stone from mining but I'd rather just get Cobblestone and then smelt it into Stone for XP.
So if anyone can chime in and tell me how Silk Touch is useful, I might actually find a use for these 3 pick axes I have sitting in a chest.
I like to use it for getting grass blocks. Keeps my from having to make dirt staircases down or up to where I want grass.
True. But for me personally, I find a level 30 enchantment kind of a waste just to obtain grass blocks.
All of my Silk Touch picks have been enchanted at level 30 and I really don't want another one.

I don't just use it for grass blocks. I use it for mycellium blocks too. The Silk Touch enchantment is pretty much for us survivalists.

I think silk touch is sort of useful. Say you want a pretty, valuable ore for decoration in your house. Diamond would be pretty awesome, right? You'd be able to tell your friends you have lots of diamond and kept some. But without silk touch? You'd REALLY have to get 9 diamonds for a diamond block. Solution: Silk touch on an iron pickaxe is easy, why don't I try it on diamond ore when I go mining?
*finds diamond in cave/ravine and uses silk touch*
Oh wow no need to save up 9 DIAMONDS.
And there are plenty of other uses.
Mycelium, Grass blocks, Coal ore and plenty more.
Even furnaces that are smelting something and still on fire! (If you have time)

Thanks, that will be helpful for when I go about enchanting, when I have a table to do it with.:D
