You have to deliver the killing blow in order to gain XP. This includes splash potions and flame effects from enchanted weapons. Gravity, cacti, and lava blades won't cut it.
Yeah I just had to fix mine today. I Just built the platform in which they land high enough to where they don't die and then one swipe of the sword to finish them off...Works like a charm now but the sitting there and waiting part sucks... Find your self a spawn dungeon and set up shop there for a while, it's alot faster. Specially with spider spawners since you can control the flow of them alot better since their movement is restricted if the opening between you and them is only one block apart. regardless of how high.
