They will grow anywhere in the nether right now, but won't grow in the overworld. Ghast shielding is recommended. They have to be planted on soul sand.
Thank you this was very helpful and I was curious myself, but one question will it start growing in our world next update or it is one of those we can only hope so things.

It doesnt work sadly. Very frusterating. Well I created a new map and it has a huge netherfortress, far larger than my last one. I am in creative mode right now trying to find the stronghold. Thankfully I didnt do too much on my other map yet.
It grows in overworld on my server... do they have a plugin? Anyway, I think they should add wither bones that can be made into wither bone meal for nether warts.

I'm certain that we'll be able to grow nether wart on the overworld eventually. Maybe it's in the next bugfix update, maybe in the next title update. In the meantime, I suggest building a large (8 x 8 or larger) nether wart field close to one of your nether portals (in the nether, obviously ). Go hunt ghasts and blazes in the meantime for about half an hour or so, and the nether wart should be ready for harvesting.

I can't see why it wouldn't do so, but the real question is will it work in the overworld...:D
and according to the wiki bonemeal wont help even when it does grow in the Overworld,
