Why did beta 1.8.2 take so long but release 1.0 took under a month? Same with microsoft cert testing, for 1.8.2 it took like 2 weeks but they never even said about 1.0 going into it?
They probably decided that all the moaning and complaining on the forum between the announce that the update went into cert and the release, that they didn't want a repeat. I was pleasantly surprised when this update was announced to drop within a week.
They were originally planning on adding the end, and possibly other stuff, to this update, but delayed that so they could get these features out now.

I need to give out more reputation. I'm not used to the system, but I see so many helpful posts. D: Sorry if I forget you!
1.8 had a lot more significant stuff and bigger stuff added to it. New Terrain generation, creative mode, all the new structures, superflat mode. Also all the new features blocks and mobs added. 1.0.1 only added just features to the game not anything really tweaked or added that is a very big thing.
Not to mention that terrain generation was redone a whole lot more in 1.8.2. 1.0.1 only had a couple things added in terrain generation.
Structures are a bit easier than the terrain formula itself. And since it is a new format all they had to do was append the new biome types... Far as I know. Of course still not so easy, but basically in comparison to what was done in 1.8.2...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
It was done so fast because they did a pretty bad job there are a lot of bugs but they did also work very hard on this one to get it to us before christmas
It's all rampant speculation; but think that much of the work on XP was already done when they decided to pull it from the 1.8.2 update and wait to add it in a later update when it had some purpose. They may have made that decisin more to keep the size of the 1.8.2 update down to a certain size limit. This probably meant that there was less raw work left to be done on the 1.0.1 update after the bug fix update rolled out than generally meets the eye.
