Usually when I first create a map I like to walk all the way around it on the outside border and then through the middle to fill it in. As I was doing this today the thought came to me that "flags" or "markers" would be a useful item. They could be used to mark of spots on the surface map such as cave entrances, spawners, lava locations, etc. Then it would be easier to go straight back to one of these locations without having to keep an eye on your xyz coordinates all the time.
This would really only be practical for the surface but it would be something I think useful.
While I don't have anything against flags being put into the game, I do there are ample ways already available to mark the locations of almost anything. For example, wny not use signs (whether you write anything on them or not)?

Because you cannot find the signs from far away. I support the OP.

As I said, there are a number of ways to mark pathways. I find redstone dust is very useful; as are lines of torches on the ground. Rail lines can also be used. Jack-O-Lanterns can both illuminate and mark direction. As Wolfe mentioned, totems can be built up, even out of different colored wools and/or lobsticks (an ancient method for marking trails in North America) can be made from trees. These "towers" can then be illuminated and then may be spotted immediately at the draw distance for all other blocks. There are many, many options.
If the OP meant marking items on the little paper map, I would think the markings could get rather crowded together in certain areas where things like mineshafts and strongholds and spawners generate in proximity to each other. As it is, often the map cannot create a separation when showing the locations of players. As I said, I really have nothing against it; but I also really don't have a problem finding my way around now as it is.
No offense meant, but what's so hard in writing down the coordinates of interesting/important locations? You know, even that good, old, low-tech pen and paper thing works for that.
i have an idea, get alot of orange wool, and them above where u want the marker to be placed u can make a platform made of like orange or blue wool, but just big enough so it appears on your map.
Sorry I wasn't clear but I did mean markers on the map. There is nothing wrong with writing down the locations on paper or a txt file. I just think having markers on the map maybe even with popup notes when you hover over them would be nice. Anyways, thanks for all the replies.

^^^ This is the exact same idea I was going to suggest. It works in the same way a map marker would, for the most part. The only downside is you will have strange floating colored platforms all over the place.

How big would it have to be to show up though? I've never purposely tried to make anything show on the map..

I've heard people say that 2x2 = one pixel, I've also heard 3x3. Best bet would be just to make it pretty big, say 10x10. Keep in mind that only certain types of blocks show up. Stone, grass, snow, lava, water, and many more, I think all colored wool blocks do too, but I'm not completely sure. It might be a good idea to just experiment in creative a bit.

Each square on the map is roughly an 8x8 area. So it'd have to be 8x8 to normally be barelly visible on the map.
But I like to just nerd pole up and then bam done. It's not that hard remembering he general direction that it's in (but then again I am a genius so it could be different for me)
I know wood shows up on the map. I think any block shows up on the map you just have to get it big enough.

That's what I do it totally works! I place lava since it fills pretty quickly all on its on and its hard to miss the red dot in your map i make it about 8*8.... But most of the time I really just write down the co-ords on my note pad on my phone... Easier that way.

Thanks guys! I need to try this. Maybe I can stop losing places...Until I lose my map.

Thanks for clearing it up. The one concern I have that I've already mentioned is that the markers may get rather crowded in some areas of the map. Popup notes may help this a little bit. The other concern would be if you die and lose your map, would all your notes transfer to the new map you might make? Also, other players in the same world would probably also not have any access to your markers or notes (this could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what sort of multiplayer game you're playing). Also, because the maps would be "in game" text, would Microsoft have to run a language check on the maps the way they currently do with signs?
The bottomline is that it's going to take more RAM to implement each addition to the game... and there seems to be an endless list of additions people want. For this one, depending on how much the player utilizes the feature and how much text they add to each pop up, it could demand a fair bit of RAM... and the penalty will probably be even more lag in the game.

Retired StaffI think not. I've built some things easily that large, yet all the map shows is the grass under them.
Stay fluffy~
