It's experience points. You get them for killing a mob or mining ores.

Create an XP farm around a mob spawner/ dungeon. That is probably the quickest way

or even using the furnace...smelting things...

but the best way to get xp would usually be a spawner trap, as smelting and mining don't give a whole lot of xp, and is more time consuming...

XP for this update compared to the PC analogue is great, because they took features from newer PC updates (XP from smelting and such) so it's not just killing mobs. But grinders are good, like everyone else is saying.

also breeding... didn't know you could do that... not sure if pc has that, as I never got that far into the game to breed a farm...><

Yea, but not enough to be significant unless you have a large farm.
