I started a world a month or two ago, haven't played a ton because I knew updates might make the world obsolete. Still, I have quite a few stacks of iron, rail, gold, maybe 12 diamonds and 49 obsidian. Haven't made much structures except a tower. I've explored the entire map (just the top, not caverns etc) and there are 5 villages but no villagers will spawn I don't think because I found them before the update.
All that being said, in *your* opinion, is it worth starting a new world? The Nether fortresses, villagers, maybe a few other features? Or would it not be worth making a new world since there will just be another update anyway sometime with emeralds and new biomes etc? No "it depends" please, I see too much of that crap on forums!
Yes, specially with the XP now. Most of the actions you do on this new map will give you XP. So re-mining all that stuff won't seem like a hassle. Believe me I had over 130 diamonds 2 double chests worth of everything. So might as well start over..... at the end of the day, It's just more mining you would already be doing. You do need a good seed that offers all of the new features and needed items for the brewing..

Check it out for awesome tutorials and constant content!
In your case yes. As you said you don't have many buildings.
But probably you'll have to start a new world again later. The next update adds jungles, ocelots, cocoa plants, and you can only get these in a new world.
We are not sure what they will add after the 1.2 update, but let's say they add Emerald, which you use to trade with the villagers. In that case, you'd have to start a new world again in order to get the emerald ore.
So basically, my advice is: start a new world now, play on it a lot, when update hits just use creative and give yourself some of the stuff you won't have (jungle trees, cocoa, ocelots with the egg spawners, etc); At least this option is better than creating a new world over and over again.
I agree with the new world then creative in your stuff you need later. Mostly since there won't be a WHOLE LOT of super-required content after this update, it's all kinda just cool bonuses (trading/emeralds) that if you've already done a lot of mining, you can just add it to your stuff through creative, or just start a new world for those features later (say, 2-4 months). Hopefully we'll be getting to a place soon where any and all updates will backwards compatible into things, but for now that's the best bet
If you can find a map with a netherfortress I would highly recommend it. My suggestion would be to create maps in creative and then check them out and see if you can find what you like.
Yes, I would say you probably want to start a new world to get the necessary ingredients for brewing; but I wouldn't try too hard to fall in love with your 1.0.1 world either. You will probably want to change it again when 1.2.3 rolls out.
I took the time to fully explore my 1.8.2 seed before the update so the terrain wouldn't get messed up. Unfortunately, the same seed if generated in 1.0.1 is covered by ocean and animals don't spawn in ocean biomes. so my 1.8.2 world that uses that seed is not getting many animals now at all. Similarly, the trees in my 1.7.3 seed have been adversely affected by the color changes to swamps, so I really don't want to work on that one any more either. So, this time round, I'm just hanging out in the new tutorial world for now and not planning anything too fancy. If I find a swampless seed with a nether fortress, stronghold and netherwart, I may start building in it instead; but I'm not really counting on doing too much before the next update comes out.
