I always loved the Xbox version for several reasons. The biggest of which was that survival was not broken. Yes, you can change the difficulty whenever you load a new game, but that was not a huge deal. In the PC version it is so easy to switch gamemodes whenever you want. There are also tons of mods. PC survival mode is really broken. Nobody plays on pure survival anymore because of all the cheats and mods. That is why I loved the Xbox version, you really could not cheat in that version, you had to play on pure survival. Not anymore. Now when you're loading a world, you have the option to change the gamemode from survival to creative and back and forth. Now you can cheat whenever you want. No point in actually playing survival anymore. You want some diamonds in your Xbox survival world? Just switch to creative and grab some. I really hope 4j removes this option. I don't like having the temptation to cheat in my survival world constantly. I liked either pure creative or pure survival.
This isn't new to this update. Besides, the easiest solution is don't change.
Well if it is not a new edition, it's still a problem. And you're missing the point. I'm always tempted while playing survival to cheat by turning it into creative.
Then don't ever use creative, I don't use creative, especially not to "cheat" on my survival maps. I like to keep my builds and adventures legit so that's what I do. Who cares if others use creative to cheat or not.
I never mix my Survival with my Creative personally. I take pride in the fact that I can tell people that I made certain things all in Survival. Want proof? Make a new profile and load it up, you'll score achievements, something you can't do once you've loaded the game in Creative mode. That right there is my proof that I slaved for some of these.
I agree with the OP. The developers shouldn't have left it up to the individuals will power not to switch. (I've said that from the beginning). There really is no reason for survival now. (How many posts have we seen where someone says, "I didn't find any _____ in my world, so I popped into creative and added some." Yea, right- like they only did it that one time. I think "greed" is stronger than "will power".)
The "I should be able to play MC however I want to play it!" concept doesn't work. You've never been able to play it the way you want to. The game is full of rules you have to play by (heck, the wiki is full of them)- water and lava only flows so far, wolves can't go to the nether, ladders have to be connected, etc., etc.
But I think this ability for a world to switch modes is a bad rule.

1) You can transfer your save file to PC and edit it if you wanted to if you couldn't change between survival and creative
2) Why do you care if somebody cheats in diamonds. They want extra diamonds, they can have them. IT'S THEIR WORLD, NOT YOURS
3) You have ALWAYS been able to play exactly how you want to
4) 30 Seconds in the source code and ALL of that can change
Also, if you don't want to play with creative, don't. If you want to play with creative, then you can. The beauty of a single player game is so that you can determine what goes on. I couldn't give two Âs if anybody cheats on their world, because it's theirs. You can cheat all you want in SP games for all I care, because it doesn't effect anybody else. Also, the user who made the world should choose how they use their world. If you aren't able to understand that creative mode is there for a reason, which is to be used, then you should really look into finding someone to help you. Honestly it just blows my mind how ignorant you are about this situation

There's no reason for survival... except, ya know, for the people that like playing survival mode. I can't speak from personal experience, since I'm pretty much always playing in creative. But, I do have some friends that play only survival and they don't seem to have that problem. And so what if someone's lying about only using creative for a missing item? It's not like "legit" pure-survival builds are more impressive anyway.
"Oh, you held the right trigger down for a total of 20 hours, just so you could build this castle? Cool story, bro."
Besides, someone could build their whole world in creative, post shots on the forum and say it was survival. Nobody would even know the difference, unless they visit said world. If you don't have self control, that's your own problem. It's not 4J's job to implement a babysitting feature for everyone.
You guys are a small minority who even care about this. Your proposed suggestion to make a few people happy would ruin a lot more worlds and bring many more sad faces. What about the people building PvP arenas? Hunger Games maps? Adventure maps? They should be punished, just because you're being "tempted" to cheat.... seems logical.
This is so funny. Its a near recounting of the story I heard about a guy who wanted to quit drinking so he tried to get the local bar closed. If you can't play a world legit, the problem is you. But its not the problem you think it is. You THINK the problem is the temptation. The problem is that you have no ideal what you enjoy in a video game at all. You want to use creative because you don't wanna spend tons of hours trying to do something, or because you don't want to lose the luck of the draw when creating a world and not having something. Here's a clue, you don't really enjoy full on survival. End of story. You enjoy survival aspects. You enjoy a health bar, and danger, and the driving purpose mobs give to the game. But full on survival mode is more than that. Its 100% surviving with what the game gives you.
For the record, I'm in the same boat. Love survival, don't love missing content. I do have full survival worlds I play with friends. Alone, nah. I do what I want, when i want to. I paid money for it, it allows me to do so. I see no reason to not enjoy what I feel like just to say I did. That happens to be why I have multiple worlds I play on.

Yeah, it's such a big problem for you, you didn't even notice it was there for 2 or 3 months. (facepalm).
ETA: The reason the option to switch relatively easily exits is because people who are building elaborate adventure maps need to be able to switch out of creative mode into survival mode repeatedly in order to test how the map will play when finished in a survival mode. Many of these maps are so elaborate they pretty much must be built in creative mode. Many of them are also built with the intention that they eventually be played in a survival mode. So, really the only viable situation is to allow the host to switch the map between creative and survival at their discretion. The option is a tool that allows them to accomplish those sorts of maps and has nothing to do with "cheating" or anyone's power to resist temptation or lack thereof... including yours.
This isn't a problem with the game at all, it's a problem with you. Stop complaining about an optional feature and just don't use it. Simple as that. The time and energy you take to nitpick about such trivial things is time and energy wasted. The game isn't "Broken" and it doesn't need to change just because you can't handle survival long enough before you decide to take the easy way out and use cheats or change it to creative. Not only that but you take your own experience and generalize, assuming that nobody plays survival just because creative mode is an option, which I can tell you, without hesitation, is wildly untrue.
Really getting tired of the "I don't like x feature so the game needs to change" threads. People really need to stop feeling so entitled and realize that the game isn't made for YOU. It's made for millions of people and if you don't like one small feature, don't expect anyone to drop what they're doing just so you won't have the temptation to cheat. Get over yourself.

I don't understand the big deal...In PC Minecraft you can switch while on the server, can't you? At least it makes it so you have to consciously decide to go into either survival or creative on Xbox when you load the world. Plus I'm sure there are plenty of seeds on the seeds list that have a little of everything, if you're that worried about missing out on something.

It's simple, if you cheat then you know you cheated, its entirely within your control, nobody is forcing you to switch it to creative.

Retired StaffAnd now the rules and bounds of how we can play has been expanded. What's your point?

Yeah. This is what I mean. *facepalm*
