Gathered animals disappearing?

I gather animals in an area so I can breed them later and every time I leave to do something and come back they are gone? How can I fix that please?

They're despawning.
Breed them first, then they don't despawn.

I did.. I had 2 baby pig, 2 baby calfs, and 2 adult cows. All gone.

Aren't animals in general not supposed to despawn? I've always thought that was how the animal system post 1.8 worked.

Workin fine for me.
I have 2 of every animal in pens (at least) includin mooshrooms. None have escaped
