(READ IT DAWM IT!)
I was on creative mode on a non-flat world. I found the flattest area I could find (a desert with only 3 elevations.)
So I made a random amount of a massive square stone frame and spent about an hour and 40 minutes filling it all in with stone.
My plan as to make a 1920's sort of indusrial New York like when the mafia was around.
But then I looked at how big this square is.. I don't know how big it is, I have no plans on where to start.
So now I'm stuck with "what do I do? Did I just waste my time making a giant stone platform in the middle of a desert?"
Anyone have any ideas or plans to help me get on track?
I built it in a desert because I imagine a lot of sand on the streets and dust from all the construction, so I wanted the area to look like it's in the middle of nowhere.^I don't want to build a temple/pyramid.
If you're trying to replicate something it usually helps to look at lots of pictures first. Here's a few suggestions for you though...
1. Always plan the basic layout of your project first. If you're doing something like New York City in the 1920's, then make sure you start by outlining where every building is going to be. You don't want to spend too much time on a building only to realize it's in the wrong place.
2. Keep your reference pictures handy. It's easier to make detailed buildings if you've got some quality images.
3. Think outside the box. All of your buildings should have a little character to them. You can do this by rounding out the corners, or using common tricks like recessed walls, columns, overhangs etc... Remember half slabs and stairs are your best friend!
4. Search videos for projects similar to what you're doing. This usually helps me draw inspiration when I need it.
5. Get a friend to help you build. Everyones building style is different, and if you want to avoid a uniform looking city, then you should get a few people in your game to help out.

The square is (North and South) 104, by (East and West) 100.
So 10,400 blocks I did by myself in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
All out of smooth stone.
There is technically no center because the square is 4 blocks too long, so when I make a big X drawing diaganol lines from corner to corner the line is 4 blocks off, so the false 'center' is a 2x2 square.
Should I take off 4 lines of stone...? I want the center to be 1 block in the very center. So the art I can put there will be a 3x3 thick collum.
I'm not sure if I even want to stick with a 1920's New York style any more.
And I don't have any friends. Last 'friends' I had were on a 'mature' roleplaying server where everythig was corrupt, strict, and just very douchebaggy.

Of course you may need to add some good players as well.
Sounds awesome!
