Basically, a piston can get power from a block that is vertically 2 blocks above it, or diagonally adjacent to the block from the vertical, but only after a block update next to the piston (meaning that a block is changed - placed, grows, moves, is powered, etc - adjacent to the piston)....
Thanks for the explaination. that helps.
MineRant alert...
If the reason for not fixing this bug is that it's going to break too many redstone devices then give us another piston that works correctly and leave that one alone. (call it a Pile Driver ) I've gotten really good with redstone but have scratched my head over and over with the way pistons work (er that is, don't work).
If they do add a Pile Driver, they could give it a repeater like adjustment, 0 would be normal, 1, 2 and 3, would launch things into the air.
For example you can run redstone on top a block that's on top of a piston to activate it but you cant run redstone next to or below the piston. (what, hummm, scratch head, rewatch youtube, load minecraft, what the f#@^, watch video again... oh ok, ah.... really. why does that work, scratch head some more).

I havent looked at the code so I may not be the best qualified to respond - but I dont think the bug rests with the piston but rather how the game treats updated blocks in general. The trick has also been used to light RS lamps, powered rails, etc.

This would be a cool addition. Like the beta piston of old.

This sounds like normal RS function. There is primary and secondary degrees of power (sometimes called Strong and Weak power in certain tutorials) depending on where a wire or torch is placed. Wire on top of a block causes that block to emit secondary power - but wire does not power blocks above it or to the sides. That attribute is given to RS torches.
Bug 1: enderman don't open their mouths when provoking or starring at them
Bug 2: magma cubes drop too much magma cream per kill (approx 10-30 magma cream)
Bug 3: nether fortresses not spawning in super flat nether maps
Bug 4: villages spawning above/inside terrain structures (like mountains)
Bug 5: eyes of Ender do not lead to a end portal, just a hallway
Anybody experience these bugs?

1. Has not been put in yet.
2. never had a problem with that due to the fact they are like slimes bigger split to smaller and of course you would get more from a big one due to the smaller ones. If you are referring to the small ones, then I have not experienced this, as I have only had them drop 0-2 from each of those.
3. would be nice, but I don't use superflat, that and it is not much a guarantee that I would get one in a regular world as of yet. I never manage to get one in any that I generate, or well one that is obvious. I should have at least gotten 1 that was obvious, but none... eh all I can do is await for the patch on this one. I do agree though that structures like these should spawn on a superflat.
4. I actually like the way villages spawn in that way. Makes for an interesting road system, if not town structure to build upon and out. The only thing I do not like is when they spawn at the edge of the map cutting most those buildings in half or more.
5. So far in my opinion, at least you can find the stronghold with these, which is good enough compared to the digging people had to do in the prior update just to find one. Possibly though the function will work better when they put in the end at a later update...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Please read! I have come across a few "bugs" and I would like to share them with you.
1. When in the Nether and you place water in it, the steam animation doesn't show for other players.
2. While playing split-screen, it doesn't allow more than one player (on that console) use the crafting table to make things.
3. While in split screen, if someone (on that console) uses an interface such as the crafting interface, or inventory, or chest, or even in the furnace, it lags the game for all players on that console.
4. This is a small thing, that I am not sure if it's a bug or not, but if you are in a bed and you "sneak"/"shift" by pressing in on the right stick, it shows your head and you can move it around, and when other players look at you, you appear to be still.
5. And another one, I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but on split screen, you can shove someone else (who is on the same console as you) off of a bed, and other players (who are on different consoles) don't see that the person isn't on the bed!
Hey guy I have found 3 bugs I think isn't in this forum.
1.When I sprint fly with the map just to load the map, (I haven't tried with sprint fly survival, host options on, just creative) when I go back to explored areas, it does this glitch thing telling me to reexplore it, I don't know how to say it, white pixels on the map reappear.
2&3. When I kick players, it chrashes my game but I want people to join the game, so when I disable trust players, I also disable pvp noone joins my game much so I haven't tried this with pvp enabled. I try to attack people when they get close to me cause I don't want them near my islands, then I can't hurt them, I don't know if they can hurt be, I enabled it on them, I crashed my xbox trying to kick someone while I was in rage.
Story on why I hate this. When I was on my island, a player joined, I enabled him everything but moderator, I told him not to come to me, but he did, I used up the last of my iron sword in a cave trying to kill him, nothing happened, I had about 20 diamonds, and I disabled everything off of him, then I found a creeper, I tried to run away, (I didn't have any word for a crafting table, l i had was sticks due to a creeper blowing up my crafting table which ended up in the lava) but a wall was in my way, then I died deep in the ground, and in the area, lava was nearby, then the stupid autosave kicked in.
A feature I would like in the next update. I would like for the autosave to kick in, but not once a player recently died if you can add a feature to that, give it about no autosave after 30 secs of a death? That would be nice cause the autosave auto kicked in once I died. There you have it.

Autosave is a timed feature and kicks every time at the preset interval. That is what it is designed to do.
If you don't want autosave to save at regular intervals and you want to do intelligent saves, you can shut it off entirely and undertake to manually save your game at whatever appropriate interval you want. That may be at approximately regular intervals (I recommend setting a timer to remind you every 1/2 hour) or whenever you do something in the game you definitely want saved (e.g. when you've mined some diamond, but before you have a chance to turn around and fall into the lava nearby). That way, there is absolutely no risk of autosave kicking in at a moment when you don't want it to. It's just a matter of taking a little responsibility upon yourself to remember to save whenever it is important to you to save.
Those moments when you don't want the game saved may be different than the moments I don't want the game to be saved. For example, I may run a very competitive PVP game where I may want the game to save each and every time a person dies. It would be really difficult to program and intelligent autosave that would please everyone under every circumstance.
My animals keep disappearing from their pens and Wolves somehow spawn inside my sheep pens but no other pens. This is getting annoying.
I have animals despawning too which is weird since TU6 was supposed to stop that. I know they are not escaping because: 1. They are in a 5 block deep pit 2. I have not seen a single brown sheep roaming outside (most of my sheep that despawned were brown) This is a game breaking bug that needs to be patched. Breeding is pointless until it is fixed.
I read of a bug where look stick failed to function in game - that maybe it had to do with inverted look or southpaw having been turned on. My husband has this problem since TU-7, though we have checked, neither southpaw, nor inverted look were checked. It's not his controller, we used different controllers with his account, and it happened with every controller we used. It was only his account, we used his controller with my daughter's account, and it worked fine.
Oh, we tried turning on southpaw, and his right joystick worked fine, and the left failed to function.
Since we want to play together, and he can't 'cause he can't see where he's going most of the time, any other suggestions for a fix?
Edit: Thank you for Return to Default suggestion, it worked.

For me, my animals despawned when I went below 40. Test your animals to see if it is distance or depth that makes them despawn. Then come back and post your results.
Wolves spawn on specific terrain (grass), wintry ones and forest. For this I can only suggest moving your pen location, sorry.

The only thing I can think of, which was mentioned before is the possibility that the sensitivity might have been reset to 0. Just check to see if that is the case. Otherwise I have no idea.

The quickest way to maybe check it out is to have him go to his "Help and Options" menu (by having him hit "start") and then resetting everything to the defaults. If the senstivities were arbitrarily reset to 0 (which is a bug between the game and the analog controllers) this should get you functional again. It should also correct any accidental "custom" settings like "invert look" or "southpaw" or one of the three available control map alternatives. After you get back to the defaults, he can then experiment with the settings to get them to how he likes them. (e.g. For pilots, "invert look" often seems more natural than the standard way; e.g 2 - Most people boost the gamma settings so they can the blocks better at night).
This update completely killed Minecraft Xbox 360 edition. Creative has all of the bugs that it has, (ugh,) and survival is completely unplayable. Normal mode is too easy and hard mode is too hard. The ghast bug kills it, there is a bug with zombie pigmen where if you explore a large area that has one pigman, if you kill him and he almost kills you, another pigman always spawns right behind me and finishes me off. Armor is too expensive to make, so that rules that out, so don't say "Oh, you should just make armor". Problem with survival is that your world does not have a nether fortress if it is before the update. I started a survival world to replace my old one because I could not brew. I spent hours working in it, and found out it had no fortress. Well, i'm done with Minecraft Xbox for now. Someone tell me when the bug fix comes out. You won't find me playing it again until then. More bugs. Hard mode is too hard because there is a glitch where you temporarily glitch into the ground and the skeleton can finish you off. Also, thanks for removing cooked porkchops being dropped from pigmen, it was my only food source. I really appreciate it. If you need me, I will be modding the crap out of Minecraft PC, with the time I would be playing Xbox 360. Kick player bug completely kills the online game feature. Update added more bugs than goodies.

Try moving it into the swamp. It will be easier to build a pen there.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but in the Nether at my Blaze Spawners... I'm noticing that the durability of stone swords = the durability of iron swords. My guess is that the iron sword is bugged in durability.
All my chickens despawn too but that's all a bit of a non-issue really since most of the time my animals won't even breed! I feed the cows wheat and they just kinda look at each other... almost looks like they know they should be doing something they just don't know what... or how... and the pigs all seem to go for one particular pig... I can feed about ten pigs and nine of them will all go for the one pig... I've tried feeding them two at a time, I've tried moving pens, making pens bigger, everything... hope the bug fix fixes that!
