After trying to make several types of elevators with mixed results on x-box i finally got one to work. Although it is somewhat slow i had several people to my world mention i should make a tutorial for it. I was thinking of making it and recording it on PC as it would be easier. What would be good software for making it or any hints on making a good tutorial?
My elevator is a pretty simple one based on pistons pushing blocks up from underneath the character. I have used it dozens of times without any glitches and people joining my game have used it often without any errors so i feel confident with it. Before i post a video i will try a few different designs to see if i can speed it up or condense it more but any help would be appreciated.
I'm sure after i upload the tutorial i will have all the advice and critique i can handle....
Try making it quick and easy to follow, but not too long or short. People don't want to see a really long ten or fifteen minute video of you rambling on about something, or a thirty second flythough that leaves people confused. Depending on how complex it is, it should be in depth enough for people to get a good idea of it, but not overly analyzed and you talking about every single thing.
Sounds similar to one of the elevators that Doc77 had to have help redesigning in his second season. Ethos has a couple but none that do that in his recent world far as I know.
It is nice hearing there are plenty of tutorials out there and someone whom wants to make another with a different design in mind. Helps put xbox functionality in, as most tutorials I seem to find out there are for PC. Not all of them working as it does in their tut, but with a few minor adjustments and they do. Although most elevators with pistons would be a bit quick, well quicker than the pc edition at the moment. Since they had an update that reduced that speed due to a piston fix or glitch of some kind. I don't quite remember exactly, but I welcome a tut that is specifically for xbox...:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

I agree i hate long winded tutorials, i usually end up skipping to the good parts. I believe for my elevator it will have about 4 main parts, the rest i consider fairly obvious redstone work, would it make more sense to walk through the 3-4 somewhat complicated parts and what they do rather than a step by step guide for every little detail(those get tedious to watch)?

My original design is slow because it depended on sand, if it went too quickly it caused the sand to turn into drops, i have rebuilt the system with a larger footprint(luckily most of the footprint is below the elevator), but it is much faster using a non-gravity block(for my newest design i used lapis blocks just to help tell different parts of the equipment apart.
My main goals are:
1) Works EVERY time.
2) Adjustable(so it can go to whatever floor you need)
-because of design i am limited to 12 blocks so far but can do between 3-12 without issues, working on a solution to go higher.
3) Small footprint for the shaft and preferably the powersuply/machines.
4) Tolerable speed.
In progress:
-Up-Down functionality.
-"Idiot-proofing" so someone cant accidentally break it by hitting something at the wrong time or standing in the wrong spot.

I personally like the detailed explanations, and think YouTube needs more of them. Most tutorials are like this: "PLAEC BLOCKZ HERE AND IT WORK! YAAYYYY MAJIC!!1!" And that, my friends, is why nobody understands redstone. It is also why they blame 4J for their own mistakes, because they followed some generic tutorial and truly have no idea what's going on.

Not that short. There should be a basic explanation of why, but not a whole lesson on Redstone engineering. That they can find in a dedicated video.

It is one reason I seem to look up many tutorials on what ever subject I am looking to make, which in the process gets me to understand just by watching so many. At least for the pc versions... However implementing to xbox design isn't too tricky for quite a few of the tutorials i've gone through. I do agree though not many do that much research before building what ever it is they want to do with redstone, and that does lead to false accusations...>< Gotta love those...>.>
Regardless, as you have said and others, it is best to have as much detail without putting too much emphasis on that detail to detour away from actually learning or understand why each part does what it does.

The reason why no one does PC tutorials anymore for elevators is because they break each new version of MC that comes out, or are so unreliable that its just not worth the effort to construct them. However if that's not going to stop you I suggest the following.
1. Don't rip, if you use ideas be sure to give credit where credit is due.
2. Don't oversimplify to the point that its becomes confusing to what your trying to explain.
3. Rehearse what your going to do several times, remember your making a movie, not doing in-prov.
4. Make sure to test your design over and over and over again with many different factors before posting, if something goes wrong within other peoples worlds and it don't work your going to hear about it. Last thing you want is that you overlooked something, ie tested with various number of players in the world, was it lagging at all, ect, these are things that almost always break elevators.
5. Does it make lag, is it constantly going, does it stack, is it resource friendly, these are questions that should be answered right away, along with a working and demoed version right away, before you start building it, so that others can see what it will look like before hand.
Thin that about covers it.
