The sponge had use in pre-alpha versions, but its functionality was removed quite some time ago. If you want to have sponges that absorb water, you might try Exanadu's Sponges mod (outdated, though).

Right now 4J is getting the xbox edition up to the 1.2.3 equivalent pc version. So if the nether was a mod at one point, then it was long before the xbox edition was ever put into production.lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

Wrong. I just recently learned where the nether came from. In the PC pre-release, a very early version, there were map types that could be selected. Things such as Normal, Forest, and even a Hell variety. The maps were just large islands smaller than our xbox map. As Mojang updated the game they took the map type mechanic out and added the Hell variety in as the nether.

According to a user below, that's not true. Even if it was, the nether is in the vanilla client, sooooo it's not a mod. That's like saying that pistons are mods, since Mojang implemented them after a mod that added them to the game. There are many other features that were added to vanilla, all because they were in popular mods. Redstone lamps are another example, but it's no longer considered a mod... since they come in the stock client.
Which ever way i like having another "dimension" to the game, the nether is cool, and when i finally make my portal a good source for glowstone (not come across any in the over world as yet.)
Glowstone only appears naturally in the nether.

Yup, the sponge is a purely decorative block.

So it was no longer a mod
Didn't know this, I joined during the days of 1.7 when the nether was already added
