Is it just me or are mob grinders not working as well after the 1.8.2 update? I used to be able to get lots of items from the mob grinder in a pretty quick amount of time. Now I am getting probably less than half maybe less than 2/3 of the stuff I used to in the same time. The mob grinder is built the exact same way and I built it in an ocean too. I have been somewhat frusterated about it since I like playing in just survival mode and want to blow up a mountain.
Any information about this would be very much appreciated.
1.7.3 was the last of the fully functional passive mob grinders. The regular agressive ones should be ok, but still have to be in range for them to work. I think 128 or something like that is the radius. Still though at that distance those would have chance to despawn.
Now in 1.8.2 the passive mob grinder went way down, to point not working at all.
So comes the 1.8.2 patch which boosted them a bit, but still not as much as it was in 1.7.3. So it is not wonder those numbers are down a bit.
In the next update though I expect the numbers to drop even further for the passive one, since breeding is supposedly coming with it. If they don't then they will in the one after, if not in the patch soon after that one.
Mob grinders are always tricky to work with no matter what type they are. However numbers are probably lower due to something not being lit up enough in an area underground. You might have this probably as some pockets of space are well hidden down there sometimes. A lot of digging to find all of them obviously. I assume you have done this in the 128 radius around the mob grinder, as any area could affect it.
Oh one more thing. make sure that slimes are not spawning within that range underground, as that could cause a drop off too, especially when a chunk happens to spawn them. This is all I can really think of in the frequency bit....

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Just finished a hostile mob farm a couple days ago and still seems to work really well in this version. But like Tamorr said, there is now a lot more open space underground that needs to be lit up, and with all this open space, even lit up, a lot of slimes spawn. That is actually my biggest problem right now, controlling the slime population. As for the mob mechanics and whether they will wander in the spawner, or fall of the edge, etc., I just build a flushing system and everything is good.
Timed my system this morning and four 8x50 pads are giving me 528 items in ten minutes.
I have a 30x30 mob spawner 30 blocks above my house, and before the update I used to get lots of powder, bones and strings from it.
But now it seems I don't get 40% of what I used to get before this update. It's just awkard, and creepers are the most rare of mobs to spawn there :/

yeah I have had a lot of problems too. This is not a passive mob grinder. I am mostly trying to get gunpowder. I have it over an ocean, but it just doesnt seem to work right anymore. I mean it didnt work great before, but now its terrible. I am glad to see I am not going nuts. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to be closer to grinder or just inside the main building.
