So I had an idea to build a theater, complete with a rising and falling red curtain controlled by a switch or a button.
I haven't really gotten into experimenting yet, but before I do I wanted to put some feelers out in the forum community to see if any people who have more experience in redstone and building mechanisms than I do, think that this might be possible.
My initial impulse is something to do with sticky pistons and wool, but I know sticky pistons only move one block at a time, and ideally I'm shooting for a good 9 or 10 block curtain rise and drop.
There might be a better forum to post this under, but I assumed that if I posted it in a general Mechanisms forum, that most of my replies would be PC players saying just to get a mod of some kind...
Anyway, if anybody has any ideas on where I could start, you rock.

Well even if it is a PC video, it does work at least with some modification on your part. Look up Portcullis redstone gate or something like that. It is basically an idea of what you are asking for.
This is what I used to make a portcullis to rise and fall. Of course you probably would need to add quite a bit to get what you want, but this is one way to go about it. Works too, as I have built one of these on the xbox.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Sand/gravel curtain is probably your best bet. I suppose you could have piston tapes that replace red wool with glass, but that's not really ideal. It would be extremely slow, lacking the falling effect you're looking for.
