ok so my and my freinds started a type of pvp surver on hard. it was a large ocean map. no mainland and alot of island. the problem we have is that since the verry start of the world no animals have spawned at all.......we have been on this game for just over a week an no one has yet to see a single animal spawn any were. we made beds thankfully to a mineshaft and spider webs but i would realy prefer not to go to creative and spawn chickens and only have chickens. all we ever see is mobs. no animals. any one know if i can do anything for this with out restarting and loseing world. i even tryed building a large flat area around a hight of 80 since the base land masses are around 65 or so.

Well you said it your self If theres to much ocean, you have a small chance of animals spawning.
Start over. Don't care if you had it since day one. start over if its that big of a deal....Thats just my opinion
ya i was just thinking to my self that i saw the world only supports around 20 or so pasive mobs...not sure if update increced it or not but i started wondering now. what if the squid were takeing up the whole thing. now i kinda feel stupid posting this question.
we wanted a pvp type of game that would be pretty difficult to get supplys........only about 5 trees the whole map........but we figured there would be at least a couple islands with animals spawning......heck. you see animals spawn all the time in the ocean not that far off from land any way. all of my freinds dont want to start a new world since they have all done so much and dont like constantly changeing worlds so i was seeing if there was any way to get animals to spawn. other wise i was just going to go creative and make a few chickens. we all wanted some farms though and such
Animals don't truly spawn in the ocean unless there is at least 1 of its' kind out there already. But since there is none found, then they wouldn't be able to spawn that way.... The initial spawn is on land, the secondary is referanced from where the animals are, when there is animals.
I don't know that this is how it works, but from my observation this is how I seen it happen, minus the ocean spawning. That is just a guess. I have only ever seen animals spawn on solid blocks usually grass/dirt blocks..
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I have just recently re-started at Survival Island seed that I had also played a couple of times before the bug fix update. Before the bug fix update, that island did spawn several chickens on both try, which made it a tough, but doable survival map. However, this time round, I have had no animals spawn at all on the island (and I played it for about 3 or 4 Minecraft days before dying). So, FEWER animals seem to be spawning on these survival island maps than before the bug fix that was supposed to increase their numbers. I'm not sure, but these may be a "side-effect" bug of whatever was adjusted in the bug fix.

The dirt has to be covered in grass. Height doesn't matter as I have a secret farm in my bat cave and I'll get animals down there from time to time
