Was just wondering, does anyone know what exactly the chances are of stuff made out of wool blocks in open air being struck by lightning? I was playing just now and a storm started up and I remembered I have a structure made out of wool.. would rather not lose and watch it burn up... I have the option turned off for 'fire spreads', but I still would rather not have to deal with it in the first place!
Is it just rare, or random or likely to happen every time there is a thunder storm???
Weird you asked this, I had just finished making a giant sphere over the ocean and soon after it started to storm. Lighting was going off everywhere, I actually wanted it to hit the sphere just because this has never happened too me, but it didn't. It only got as close as a near by island setting some grass on fire.
Side note: has anyone ever seen a super creeper or a zombie pigman in the over world? I have yet to see either. I am almost tempted to herd some pigs just to see if I can get one struck by lightning.
The closest I've seen of Lightning catching fire to something is Striking me dead on.... Now that was surprising, when it hit me for the first time... Of course that was the only time I have ever been hit by it...O_o It rains too much on my world....>< 1 or 2 days clear and weeks of rain, or well at least it feels like it....lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

I've had it hit the ground very near me and briefly set the grass block on fire; but it self-extinguished rather quickly. It has hit my wooden roof a couple of times, but that also extinguished quite quickly.
That would take forever.....Since I play on survival, and not having creative touch this specific one. lol
but is a good idea, however just looks not so great.
You can use any block.... Dirt... Diamond block, cobblestone, glass... anything..

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
I know when I was playing on my friend's world I had my dogs outside in a fenced in area.. Well it started to storm and lightning I guess struck the ground where my dogs were and caught a couple of them on fire. During this time I was working on my tree house so when they got struck they teleported to me... I was a little worried that my dogs would catch my house on fire since they were on fire. Thankfully they didn't, but I did lose those dogs. =/ My friends were laughing the whole time, because of my horrified face.. haha
Lol that sucks >.< I didn't know animals could catch fire like that. From lightning. I have a pen on one world like that made out of wooden fence and they have always been fine... it's sad when you worry about your animals

I am not quite sure what all happened, one of my friends was walking by my dogs and a white flash came out of no where and then all of a sudden some of my dogs were by me on fire. It was one of those what the heck kind of moments, we all did not know what to think.
With fire spreads turned off you may loose a block of wool, where it actually makes the strike but not much more, with it off however it will pretty much destroy the whole structure. I had a nice little tent on my 1.7.3 world that lightning had struck and it caught it and all the trees around it on fire. There wasn't much left when the fire finished.
When building stuff out of wood planks its a smart idea to use wooden slabs instead, reason is wooden slabs don't burn, place one a block above netherrack and light it, you'll see it won't burn. Extremely useful if you want to put a fireplace in a wooden building, keep in mind however that stairs, fences ect will still burn. Lightning striking wooden slabs will not catch fire either, well it will but it won't do any damage.
I have a pixel art world, where I build huge pixel arts. And I think I've already seen lightnings setting my pixel arts on fire over than 7 times.
As an advice, if you're making a vertical pixel art, pick an inflammable material and cover the top of your pixel art so you won't have problems later.

Thanks in advance.
