So I spent an hour trying to build a basic water elevator(small pool at bottom, waterfall on one side, boat that(should) ride around constantly). Problem is, my boat never goes up the waterfalls. I even made a 10x10 pool & took out the floor, letting it all fall into a 10x10 pool 10 blocks below. Then, I put the boat in, & it still did nothing. Please help! Also, sorry if this has been posted before.
Enclose the area you want for the water elevator. I suggest a 2x2 square and I like using glass panes then instead of using one water source at the top fill the entire way up with water source blocks you should have no trouble if you do that.
A much easier water elevator is just using signs and source blocks. You can do this with a 2x2 tunnel or whatever you choose. To make, you just alternate sign-water source-sign-water source as you go upwards in the tunnel. You may need some strange sign placement for any tunnel bigger then 1 block.
All you do is hold A and you go up without drowning as you hit an air block in between each water source. I use this method to transport mobs from my mob grinder, very effective for your own uses as well.

Ya but if he is going to do that he might as well remove the signs and fill the whole tube with source blocks. Once you do that a boat will go up the tube much, much faster then the sign water sign method. You can even implement an easy loader, boat dispenser, and use the boat as transportation at the top, you can even implement a drop back into the dispenser from the top.

The method I told him of does not use a boat at all. All you do is hold the A button and you float up in between the air blocks and water source blocks. I have no clue how to go about doing the more complicated boat contraptions so I gave him the easy method that I use in my houses as up/down methods and mob grinders.
Okay that is awesome, puts the lame water elevators I am using to shame. I am no good at designing contraptions, just does not work well for me at all.
I do have a question. How does the boat go up with all source blocks? I understand the redstone portion of it, but I do not know my minecraft mechanics with water all that well. I will have to try this out though, thanks for sharing and your time.
No problem man. It goes up with water source blocks because a boat will always try to ride on top of the water, now since the whole tube is water source blocks it will hit the top of one block and keep going to the next etc etc...until it hits the top. With a waterfall you have the downward force of the water holding you down. I myself use a slightly more complicated design that staggers running water (horizontally flowing water) designed by DocM77 that shoots you up the tube like a rocket. I'll post some pics when I get home tonight.

Ah I have seen Doc's stuff, one of my favorite youtubers for the minecraft stuff. I will look his water elevator up and see what your talking about.
But that would be much appreciated, extra influence would help since I want to try my hand at designing one. My base is right on a river so maybe I could manage something to pop me right out into the river.

Ya the cool thing is if your water elevator comes up under an ocean or river you don't need to make a tube right to the top, because the river and ocean are source blocks and the boat will rise right to the top.

This is what I thought, which is why I haven't tried building a water elevator...
Thanks, I'll try that.

The tube going up is all source blocks.
I then added pressure plates and trap doors to hold the boat in place all you do is jump in the boat press the button and away you go.
I put a cover over the source blocks here because if you place the boat there it gets stuck.
And that's it.
