Or 'cacti'. I have searched my whole world and fully uncovered the map, but I don't even have a single desert region on it (I made this world a few days ago and have already accumulated alot of work and time and effort, so I don't want to just abandon it because of this issue). I have a section with lots of snow, large mountains, quite a bit of water, great cave systems, haven't found any abandoned mine shafts yet, a few small beach heads, lots of flat plains with tons of grass, enough clay to make 10 slots of 64 brick blocks, but no CACTUS! Not even one : ( is there a way to find/make some? I would rather resort to loading in creative just to add one cactus to my chest to grow if nothing else works.
By the way, I have heard of other people's bad luck on getting cactus, but I just want green wool. I hate cacti, personally.
Yeah Creative would be the only way, I guess you got clay instead of cacti. I have only found one block of clay on my whole world and a whole bunch of cacti... Though! 3 mineshafts so far and 3 villages.

That sucks! >.< Ugh... So that leads me to another question.. can cactus only grow if it's in sand? I mean, since I have no deserts, how would I go about doing that? Just place a few sand blocks and then put one cactus block on there and wait?

Yes, it only grows on sand. If you were to add cacti on creative, you would have to plant a cactus block on the sand for it to grow.
It's a long shot, and I don't even know if it would work (passersby readers please clarify if right or wrong)...but do cactuses randomly spawn in desert biomes even when you don't start off with any? If this is the case, you may have a chance of finding a submerged dessert biome in the water. You can just raise the ground above water, top it with sand, and play the waiting game.
Again, I have no idea if this would work. Just an idea, I wouldn't want to mislead you into making an island for nothing. lol

1 block? O_o must not have any swamps or not enough water/ocean or an older map... the ocean floor is made up of sand clay and dirt. Same with swamps. Also if you have a village sometimes clay spawns near the water in the crops for some reason.

I don't believe they randomly generate I believe what generates initially is what you get, but you can find some submerged in water some times. So for example in a beach you can wander into the ocean that's a couple blocks deep and there might be some in there.

I've been swimming/boating around for the last hour looking for some, and also some red and white mushrooms. I have found tons of the brown ones, but no red and whites for soup... just loaded creative and will place one red and white shroom and 1 cacti block in a chest then save and exit... It bothers my ocd that there isn't any to begin with!

I could post my seed for you guys if you would like to check it out : ) I like it. Up until I found out I have literally not one single bit of desert.. lol. I just placed alot of sand around this one area and put that cacti in the middle. Maybe something will happen now!
the snowy region is at the very top-right. from the spawn (where I spawned) there is two caves semi-close together that both have monster spawners in them and one of them has a chest where I found a saddle and cocoa beans and other cool stuff!

red mushrooms can be easily found in the nether...O_o
actually both kinds can be found there...
And about the clay, yeah it can be really tricky to find, especially under water in the ocean... Since the ocean floor is further down than in 1.7.3. passing them up because they look like stone...O_o hmm... yeah kinda'. mainly look that way under water though....lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
actually all you need is 2 buckets. If you have found lava, you can mold your gate. building it up layer by layer with dirt fill every spot with lava, then pour water over it. Insta-obsidian. Just remember to do each lay for the mold 1 at a time. Simple, but that is if you know where the lava is.

I would have suggested maybe a transmutation machine, but I haven't gotten any to work with the newest patch that was built anew.
