I build a third-generation sand cannon and am beginning to have problems with it. By that, I mean that what worked perfectly before, doesn't work at all now and I didn't tamper with it. They all worked for a time, but then after a while there were just more and more mis-fires untill the cannon didn't work at all. This cannon is crutial to my Rube Goldberg machine and has to work. Does anyone know how to fix this, or experiencing anything similar to this "redstone lag"?

I have had tons of misfires with cannons....I never played PC so I don't know what is common as far as misfires go. I do know that sometimes the cannon will be on a good run then misfire a bunch, then back to amazing shots. Sorry I can't be of any help.

Prior to the 1.8.2 update all my redstone worked great, then the update came out and lagged everything out pretty bad...
Recreated the devices on a new 1.8.2 map, and they work great now.

As much fun I would have, re-creating a 2 week project, I don't think making it in a new world is a lieable option for me. Do you think just re-building the whole cannon would work?

First of all, what sort of cannon do you have? It must be pretty insane to take two weeks to build.
Anyway, things will be a bit buggy on old worlds, this is to be expected. Strange things tend to happen in pre-update worlds, so my suggestions may not work. This is a bit obvious, but you're aware of the new activation cap on TNT, correct? If your problem is truly the fault of a redstone-related bug, or you suspect it is, a good idea would be to check for corrupted blocks. When your cannon dry fires or acts strangely, look for redstone items that are on, but should be off, and vice versa. Find the exact source of the bug and break the redstone item, along with the block it was on, then save and exit. Load your world again, replace the blocks and save again, if it was a corrupted block this should fix it. There are also certain bugs that can appear to be caused by a corrupted block, but actually aren't. Some mechanisms won't operate correctly when oriented in a certain direction, when built on a chunk boundary, or both. This is a common problem for many devices using pistons.
You could always recreate your cannon on a superflat world. This would allow you to find out, for sure, if the problem is internal to your machine, or an issue due to bugs in an old world. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck in conquering the glitch causing you so much grief.

I was totally wondering that! Does the direction in which some redstone components are placed affect the way they work? i.e A repeater pointing North as opposed to south? Or not under normal circumstances just bug-like instances?

As far as I know, nothing involving direction affects a repeater directly. In the issues I've seen, pistons are the only things affected by the glitch, it has something to do with a bug where devices can send a false half-tick. I know what you're thinking, "But Nose_Job, there's no such thing as half a tick!" but it's true, there is technically such a thing as a n.5 ticks. Generally you can't see it, and it won't register to a redstone item. Pistons are instant, so they represent this visually, and it can cause some problems. For example, a regular piston pushing a block when it shouldn't, or a sticky piston dropping a block.
