I would suggest rooms with different colored walls, an empty double chest, a crafting table, at least 1 furnace, a bed (of course), and a wood slab floor. I would also suggest having a food service (charge Iron ingots), and a Nether Portal that lets you loose in a fortress. I also think making a sign out of wool and glowstone (surround with glass). As for the exterior, that's up to you but I would use common materials but not something that blends into the area. Hope this helps. Keep building. red_tail94
Here are some pointers I've learned from building...
-Double-layer the floors and walls. This way, you can color-scheme the walls, floors, and ceilings without interfering with the other side. For instance, I put patterns in the floor. What may look appealing on the floor of that particular room may do for quite a ty ceiling for the room below.
-Always build big, and adjust accordingly afterwords. Its easier to shrink a building than have to expand it from lack of space.
-Prevent monotony wherever possible. Nothing looks uglier than a goose turd for a cobblestone building. On that same note, don't overdo it. A multicolored building can look like literal vomit from far away.
-Lastly, DONT USE DIAMOND, IRON, OR LAPIS BLOCKS AS YOUR MAIN BLOCK FOR BUILDING. A little here and there is ok, maybe even impressive when used appropriately...but moderation is always key to everything.
