Hey guys I was just wondering if you can play minecraft on an original Xbox. Thanks.
Hmm, you might be able too. Surely wouldn't be performant by any means. 733Mhz Processor with 64MB will probably have problems even running on the stripped down W2K kernel.
I think the biggest barrier to even trying it though is that as far as I'm aware there isn't a way to get Java installed on it, and, in particular, it's stripped down OS does not support the standard Win32 Desktop API, and the inbuilt Video does not support OpenGL, either.
Performance wise you might be able to squeeze an almost playable experience from it, ignoring those rather glaring problems. I'll address each one:
CPU Speed: 733 Mhz PIII This is a bit difficult to gauge. Most people compare Consoles directly to PCs, but what they forget is that Consoles are typically built as Single-task machines; They only do one thing at a time. Even when you play a game on a PC there are countless background tasks; things like AV suites scanning every file your game opens, your other applications will sometimes process idle tasks, etcetera. Not to mention OS services such as automatic disk defragmentation. None of this is an issue on a console, so one has t obear that in mind. So, would minecraft run on a 744Mhz Processor if it was devoted the entirety of it's run-time? I'd say yes; I got minecraft running on a 1Ghz Machine once, stripped down XP install and set the java process to real-time. Everything on the lowest settings gave a nominal 15-16fps, which could be playable to some people.
RAM: 64MB isn't a lot, but as mentioned above, a lot of the drain on a PC is the fact that you are running other stuff at the same time. Most of the RAM issue would be with Java. Java and Garbage Collection in particular are not very good for machines with very low RAM.
Anyway, short story is no. Would it be possible for a version to be written that works well on the Xbox? Of course. That isn't going to happen, though.
If you are talking about the original Xbox 360 (the bulkier, noisier units) then yes you can, I still have an old one in my bedroom and it plays just as well as it does on the new 360.
srghg, I somehow doubt that you got it running. Posting a couple of unrelated pictures isn't "proof".
1- Who still has a 7+ year old console that still works?
2- Huge memory problem, as noted above. Even on the xbox 360 4J said, regarding memory, that they're already "using all of it".
3- You're a little late. Live, which you need to download MC, was discontinued for the original xbox a year and a half ago (4/15/10). http://majornelson.com/2010/02/05/xbox-live-being-discontinued-for-original-xbox-consoles-and-games/

Retired StaffThe 360 has a hard enough time running Minecraft. The original Xbox would explode, probably tearing the very fabric of time itself.
Knowledge is power, guard it well.

Retired Staff1. Did you seriously not get that was a joke?
2. I have a 21 year old console that still works. Sega Genesis FTW!
