I started my city of amber back in 1.6. So I am legit (:
But people just want to be known and popular. It's america man, what do you expect? (Most people who have mc xbla are american so I just assumed)
I think modern citys are nice as long as they are done right. What I mean by that is all unique builds that stand out. Not because they are huge in size, but because they are nice and work well with the surroundings. I've made a pretty nice town totally legit, and i've made a medieval town on creative which I think both look pretty nice.
People like to build cities because of the reason why people wanted to build them in real life. To actually build something spectacular, and say you built that.

I need to give out more reputation. I'm not used to the system, but I see so many helpful posts. D: Sorry if I forget you!
Working on a megabuild right now...I swear i wanna quit on it. But i also wanna see how it turns out so im not gonna give up on it.
Its just the fact im a solo builder and its take way longer than i thought....
Cities are great as long as they're dynamic. Flat cities can be neat, but often get boring after you see a few. The best kind are dynamic ones, like ones built in the air or in a tree or in a massive cave or something.
I like cities. If done well you can explore all the different buildings. I am making one, but it's very new. Right now I'm working on the sports district (baseball field, football field, tennis courts etc.) It's boring if you only use stone, but if you use bricks, obsidian, soul sand, and sand stone, they can be unique.
before creative, at least you knew they worked hard on it so that deserves some recognition.
however, i just don't like cities. i'm not impressed by them in the least bit.
they look like a bunch of  clumped together.
Obviously has not seen a whereiswaldo114 city before
Yes there are bland, they aren't unique. It's really just layered wool. People build them because the think as long as it reaches the limit it is impressive
Honestly when we are talking about modern cities here, its only as good as you make it. If you make only layered wool with glass, of course its going to look like crap. But when you focus on every little detail and aspect of a city then it going to look fantastic! Everything must be there for a reason, and everything must be organized or else it will looked clumped, messy, and horrible, Like nerd cake said.
Now srghg, you are a different story. Saying a GOOD modern city isent unique is just you being completely and utterly ignorant. Having the creativity to make 200 DIFFERENT, unique structures is difficult enough, but organizing, and making all 200 of those structures flow into one city is ridiculousness to the max! It take alot of skill and alot of planning to actually make a good modern city.
And that is not including how TEDIOUS it is to make all the floors, AND the interiors?
Its like that for any style of building, modern, future, mid evil, fantasy. Planning, and detail will get you far and will make your build look good.
Ive tried almost every style of building. And I can say without a doubt that modern is the absolute most time consuming one. So all the people who say that Cities are bland, boring, and dont impress, Those are the people who dont know the first thing about building.

You also have never seen a whereiswaldo114 city.
alright. well. i like your city, good key things you have there... But. its not that good. its still just a city, nothing diffrent from the others. Your bridge is pretty awesome though, they obviously haven't seen whereiswaldo114 bridge!
My 1st world was a survival world and as I began to progress more into the world I began to make huge builds and giving the world and area a back-story. Eventually I started to play it strictly on Peaceful and ended up slowly modifying mt castles and forts and adding in villages/cities all with some sort of back story/history. My best friend eventually started helping me months back, creative was a godsend since we did a majority of our builds in our world legitimately (a bit of duping too) and it took soooooo much time, Creative Mode cuts down the time quite a bit but we still take hours to do certain builds and we haven't even put a dent into what we actually want to put in. I'm already planning on making a replica of Elios (the creative) but how it would of looked many years before the current world.

I'm working on a megabuild myself, but when it gets me tired, I switch to Skyrim or Halo343.
I build in survival mode when I am building for the purposes of surviving and defending in survival mode.
I flip to Creative mode, when I am building for the purpose of building.
Within the same world, I don't tend to do creative mode stuff in areas I am playing as a "survivor"
I've built big things in survival mode. But it was more of a chore to collect materials. Given that i follow my protocol for defensive structures, it's not like I was in any danger from monsters, which would have been the source of challenge of playing in survival. Once you wall off, light up, and only mine in controlled spaces, you don't really encounter any monsters. So all that's left is boring mining to gather blocks to make the building.
When building a city I try to start with a "Super Structure" (castle, tower, etc) and then build my city our and around the mega build. That way it has a purpose and a focal point. I never recreate the same smaller house just to "fill in space". And I also spread out other Large creations in the city to break the pattern. And city on Mincecraft Xbox or PC can be epic it just takes some imagination and a little bit of thinking. I'll try to get some of my current creations on this thread when I get home tonight.
I have 3 cities built in my world: the modern town in the south (going to expand soon), the medieval kingdom which is having some tweaks, than the one in progress: the underground steampunk city. that will take a long time. and a lot of this > and >

Spend more time mining out all that cobblestone than actually building. :x
