I am just saying, save a lot. You could also put signs saying big room here and pointing a arrow. That is what I do.
If you don't have autosave on, turn it on! I learned my lesson....my mineshaft crossed a ravine, trying to build a bridge across to the other side and fell. Respawned to my house, on my way back I fell into a lava fall and died again. All my stuff from the first fall was lost, including but not limited to my diamond shovel, diamond pick axe, and lots of wood I had gathered so far. Turned my autosave back on after that!
I TRIED A COUPLE OF THE METHODS, MAINLY THE DISMANTLING/WALLED OFF OBVIOUS AREAS/AND TORCH TO THE RIGHT....
ISSUE LIES IN THE EXTENT OF THE MINESHAFT OR SHAFTS. THEY ARE LARGER THAN I EXPECTED.. IM IN A NEW OR CONNECTING MINESHAFT FOUND ANOTHER CHEST ..THIS TIME WITH . MELON SEEDS! BUT THERE IS STILL ALOT OF MINESHAFT TO EXPLORE... THE ISSUE WITH THE METHODS.. ALL METHODS..... IS THE INTERCONNECTING CAVES AND RAVINES ATTACHED TO THEM.. ITS HUGE GUYS! IF I WALL OFF AREAS.. THEY WILL GO UNEXPLORED.. SO IT'S BEEN AN ADVENTURE FOR MY FIRST MINESHAFT PLUS ITS NOT ON PEACEFUL SO MY TREADING HAS BEEN SLOW AND CAUTIOUS.
YOU ALL HAVE BEEN FREAKING AWESOME HELP, AND YES I'VE SAVED ALOT AND RESORTED TO FULL INVENTORY= MINING STRAIGHT UP TO GO HOME AND REFUEL. :-D

I normally try to do it in a few stages if i can help it. In order to get the loot out i try and build a minetrack station so i can put the chest carts near the entrance but the idea with the torches positions on the blocks is a good one.
I can see that being useful and just change the block its connected to to indicate if theres anything of worth
