So I'm just wondering.. how do you generally mine for ores?
Myself I'll go in caves and find whats there, but a lot of the times I'd rather dig some steps down low and start my own cave.... I find it its generally free of mobs....
For Example this is what I came up with in one of my recent mining expeditions..
Also in the event of a ninja creeper or just bad luck with some lava i'll mine it all out until I'm satisfied then collect my reward... that way if I die, I really only loose a whole lot of cobblestone and some tools but my ores are all pretty much intact.
Well......? How do you mine?

Most of the time I start by making the good old fashioned staircase down to bedrock, sometimes coming into contact with caves and then mining what I can. I usually end up making a very large box underground after a days worth of mining.
Depends on my mood, as mining is one of those things I actually enjoy doing, well at least more than cutting trees down.
Usually though Caving will be kinda the first bit that I would do, until I find a nice spot. When I find that spot I will do a bit of Branch Mining for rare materials. Usually starting it at eye level 12. From there possibly make above and below depending on the materials I am looking for as well.
I prefer branch mining over caving, since caving is a maze that I get often lost in. That and a lot of unforeseen drops when mining out ores.
Either way eventually I get what I need and possibly make a minecart track at least to the entrance to the area from my storage vault. Which usually involves more mining.lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I used to predominantly use the drift mining (aka room and pillar) technique. However, since ravines and mineshafts were added, I'm finding that caves, ravines, and mineshaft systems are so numerous that even when I start with the classic staircase down, I inevitably wind up in a massive cave system anyway. Likewise, my drifts seems to only run a few blocks before opening up into some big open space in the ground or a bunch of interconnected lava lakes (when I'm on level 12); so it's seeming sort of pointless to try to start something more organized than just spelunking.
My mining procedure is always the same; Dig a staircase down to or near bedrock, make a central room for storage and smelting and start making 3x3 branch mines going out in all directions. If I have the supplies, I like to put actual stairs on my staircase, since jumping eats up hunger. Then, if the mine is a successful one, I'll likely make a minecart railroad system inside of it for efficiency. And of course, I always make sure everything is lit up well.
I usually go cave mining in caves that are close by. When I have drained them (or have enough resources to last a while), I dig down to bedrock, go up 7, and start branch mining. I usually branch mine for diamond, but I go for pretty much anything I can find.
It kinda depends on how bored I am. If I'm not bored, I just walk around caves and get ore. It works pretty well. If I'm bored, I blow up my own cave with some old-fashioned TNT and find caves and ravines, but if I'm REALLY bored, which is almost never, I just don't mine... I stare at Endermen and blow up Creepers.

Well sorry if Minecraft doesn't have enough "action" for you.
I do branch mining around level 10 and above with slime areas below and tend to do open cast quarry on surface too.
Pretty much this but on level 12. I have found less lava around that level so I am perfectly fine with that. With branch mining, If I find any ores then I will dig around said ores for a good 10-20 blocks to find all and back fill the old spots.
I do open quarries above ground for things such as cobble, sand and dirt if need be, not so much for the ores. I have not done an open quarry further then level 50 I think so may be worth it one day down to bedrock.

im not bashing the game, but there's no denying the fact that this game can be horrendously boring pretty easily, which is exemplified exponentially from a spectator's POV. it's also boring if you compare it to a good chunk of other games since it's pretty slow-paced 90% of the time.
on topic, does anyone else make a vertical shaft to whatever layer they want with ladders? i do it every time just because dropping into a water hole at the bottom is a lot faster than walking down stairs

Yeah I'm all about making a huge box like on my pic there i found the Gold at the top coming down some steps i built and then just started going around those ores making a bigger and bigger box, though for all that work I only came up with 3 diamonds you can see on the right side.... :-/ on others normally the pay out on diamonds is about 6-9.

I only make a vertical shaft when I do a slime farm, and mark the top with a structure of some kind. Other than that I could see myself maybe doing a mob trap of some kind and not much else with the idea. To me though mining isn't the boring part, it is chopping the trees that gets to me...

I almost always dig a two by one vertical opening down to eye level 15. Then I dig 3x3 hallways right and left of that and start branch mining two high by one wide from that. The last one I did had 10x10 rooms about every 75 blocks or so with storage, ovens and a bed in each. That way I could spawn close in case of accidents. I also played with underground tree farms as well as food in the areas that were duds. The food(wheat, cane) worked fine, but I guess I never opened up enough of an area to get enough trees to make it worthwhile lol.

I do the same, except for the "underground box"
