Ok. So. 6 months of digging and play exclusively in Survival Mode on the same map has netted us a nice hole in which I am building a castle. Why we did it, or why a castle is going in it, I do not know, but it's cool, and starting to look like it will be good.
Our only step out of Survival and into Creative, was in effort to get melons not available in pre-1.8.2 maps, taking it off the leaderboards, but that's fine, WE know it is all legit.
What I am looking for now is input. I have a 3X3 piston door at my front gate, plans for another one IN the castle that will open a secret passage, I will also be doing a dungeon with obsidian lined cells and a redstone powered control center and a button board with a switch for each door, and have no clue what else to do. I have doorbells, 12 digit combination lock, and a few other things including a clock tower that makes a constant tick-tock sound, but none of that fits with the theme of a castle.
Anyone have any good ideas that we can incorporate at least a part of?
My walls and tower is built, but that is about it. Plans for a courtyard with houses built from each mineral we mined out, if there is enough (gold ore, obsidian, lapis, moss stone).
Also, can somebody PLEASE explain to me how to get grass to grow really far down or really high up? This bare dirt stuff in the giant hole and up on the hanging gardens is ridiculous!
Doesn't that kinda... ya know... defeat the purpose. xD
Either way, it's looking nice. As for redstone ideas, there's always the classic moat and bridge. Perhaps some traps here and there, a few hidden rooms.
I can help you on the grass part. Since you entered creative just use the grass blocks
I'd love to but my wife and brother (the other 2 miners on this project) would kill me! I was only supposed to delve into creative mode once to get melon seeds, half a stack, and nothing more lol And I had to put it to a vote to even do that, we have been pretty strict about survival only here, and so far, the town and castle-hole together are more impressive than half the creative mode stuff I've seen

Yea I know haha, sober minds did not think that part of it up. But since it got started, we've stuck with it. Kind of works, you can't see it/don't know it's there until you are right next to it, and if an invading force survived the way down, they would STILL have to siege walls and such like normal

Build a spiraling staircase from a grass block to your dirt area. Eventually (note, this will take a long time) the grass will spread all the way down the staircase and across your plot.
About the creative mode stuff, that's because nobody sets their goals high enough. Most people aim for what they would normally build in survival. Most of the creative builds I've seen on MCXBLA were built in a week, tops. The only thing that bothers me is when people make excuses for their creations not being as good as a PC version build, blaming it on mods or whatever. Those amazingly epic builds on PC took months of work, from dedicated players. It seems a lot of MCXBLA players just aren't willing to put that much effort into a single build.
Then again, a supremely incredible creative mode project could be in the works as we speak. Personally, I would rather construct one epic build over the course of several months. As opposed to a few mediocre projects within the same timespan.

That's basically what this is, one build, been ongoing since the game came out on XBOX, an epically huge sprawling town, etc. We have about 1/2 the map covered. And this project is far from over. I believe my GT is under my avatar here, shoot me a FR, I will give you a tour sometime, and reveal some stuff about future projects to come
Looks like the next step will be figuring out some small houses for the courtyard, something neat looking, around 2 stacks worth of main material, since they will each be made out of a material mined from this hole, ex: 1 gold ore, 1 iron ore, 1 obsidian, 1 moss stone, and one lapis lazuli house, kinda like a neat little "elitist" village for the main builders of this thing.
I have thought about doing a secret escape door, but was wanting to use the 3X3 door set up for it, because I can just match material then and make it super hidden. I am even able to get it to work with a button from either side, which makes it very useful. Thanks for the ideas so far guys, very helpful!
A castle, dude, look at it. No place for an automatic farm there. Somewhere around here is a show off thread I had for my whole town. Idk where it is though
attach the entire staircase going down into the hole to pistons, so you can flip a lever down in the castle and the staircase dissapears into the wall of the cliff. No way in

Well, unless the attackers brought a bucket of water. lol.
Well, we got grass, a small village in the courtyard, and have began building the main part of the castle. Will post pics of it all when I quit getting error messages every time I try to share to facebook!
Which reminds me, I made this page just for this map/town/castle, feel free to add it! (Not my real name, btw lol)
I didn't, actually, it just started working again. once in a while it gives the same old error, then I call it ugly names in German and the next time I try, it works

Make steps of dirt next to grass, and have it slowly lead down there. As long as it's lit brightly enough, it'll transfer to the next block.
