Poeticwhisperer is right on... snow blocks, once crafted from snowballs, will not melt. This was intentionally set up that way so that you can build with them and effectively light whatever structure you make. You don't want hostile mobs spawning in your igloo home. If you mine them with a shovel, they will return the 4 snowballs you made them from. If you break them with your hand, you will lose the snowballs.
Although snow doesn't melt, I really don't have much use for it since Ice melts. Would be nice if they made a snow slab/stairs to go along with the block, and a few other things that might hit the winter realm a little more, beyond using wool that is.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
So if you put a snow block in the nether, it wouldn't melt?
Correct. The snow blocks will not melt no matter where they are placed. That is by design to let something from a winter wonderland able to place and keep.

Actually just did the same thing. Made a small building out of snow blocks, killing time; only to think wait a second, This crap will into mush with a torch, after a while I realized I was just dumb. Retard moment, I get em often in this game.
Slight Off topic: Hell, another retard moment with redstone. Made a dispenser setup for the easy to need items; food, swords and such. Well I put the dispenser down thinking, this thing is powered and I am ready to go. Nope, sat there for 30 minutes only to realize I had set the dispenser down with NO power whatsoever, not even a button.

Snow blocks never melt.
I was unaware of this. I have always been afraid of using snow blocks because I was under the impression they would melt. Thanks guys!
I think people get them confused or just assume that since one does, the other must do it as well.
