So now that you have screenshots...
Why isn't there a fix in the coding for this? The animals wander out in the middle of the ocean to almost never be seen again. Meanwhile, the animals on land are far and few in between. I just spent roughly 20 minutes killing off animals that were in the water. As you can see, it's FAR away from my house ._.
Does anyone else experience this? I think the animals should be programmed to seek out land, not wander in the ocean to never return.
I've never seen that before, maybe others have? I don't know, I haven't gone on MC after the bug fix, not until later today. Maybe the bug fix made another bug? I have no idea, but there seems to be way too many mobs that far into the ocean in those scrernshots.
My guess is that with the bug fix, more mobs are spawning, and I guess they like to travel in the water...
Does this happen often, chuissu? If not, it may be a minor bugged thing, if so, that's going to be irrattating.
I've been researching to try and find an answer. It looked like one user was experiencing this problem back in 2011. Whenever I make a new world, the mobs spawn and disappear into the ocean. I even had a world previously that had more land than water, it was all connected... Yet the animals were almost nonexistent on land. It wasn't until I was trying to find new islands that I realized sheep and cows/pigs were swimming around everywhere, far from land.
I went out and killed a bunch of those animals. Many of them seem to have respawned on land, but they very quickly get in the water. If I leave them in the water and look back later, they've already swam out and seem to be stuck.
Not sure if it's a bug or not, but was wondering if other people experience this problem. It's frustrating trying to farm them to get the meats and wool when you have to go under them in the water before you shear/kill them.
My boyfriend also plays on a different XBOX (we have two versions to play together) and his worlds are typically empty of animal-life. So yeah... Not too sure what's going on.
Hmmm... I know i've experienced similar to this even in 1.7.3, but the animals seem to start on land then. However once they go into that ocean or deep water it is like they don't want to come back to shore "ever". As far as it being a bug... I just think it is part of the behavior system "AI" of the passive mobs. At least when they start on land.
I am unsure though if it is intended behavior or not, but it is like a black hole ocean out there. Sucks them in till they are stuck swimming a lifetime away. Never had any start out in the ocean though...O_o As I thought they only spawn on land. One thing to keep in mind though that mobs like this do move around when a good distance away, so it is possible even if only a small shread of land is around that they will probably spawn on that piece of land. For some reason though they prefer the ocean swimming rather than walking. O_o
I don't think they spawned in the water, but made their way out there somehow over short period of time. Seems they are fast in water as they are on land...O_o

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Seen it a few times. One of my friends has a world that would be about 90% ocean. Flying from island to island, just about every animal you come across is taking a dip in the big drink. & not just off-shore either. Their way out into the deep drink, where no land is in sight. & they don't try & swim in any general direction, or towards land, for that matter. It's like they want to be out in the water, swimming in circles.
Taking a look at your pictures, I've never seen it that bad before... Well, only on PC.
I never really had issues with animals before the update. The screenshots were only HALF the animals in the water, since I'd been killing them and it seemed to no end... even AFTER the screenshots, I kept going through the ocean finding them. I eventually got tired from it all and gave up.
If it's a behavioral thing for the AI's, I think it's something that needs to be fixed. I've never seen a cow or pig treating the ocean like a swimming pool IRL, have you?
I don't think it's that they spawn in the water. They're just spawning on my island and swimming out into the ocean. My world right now is kind of an island? The piece of land I'm on now is large and has a massive mine underneath it. But there are a couple tiny islands in the distance. I wasn't aware mobs WOULD spawn way away from you, since it seems kind of counterproductive. In the other worlds I've had, I've even ventured out to other areas to find animals to no avail. That, and I'm pretty sure they'd made an update recently where the animals wouldn't despawn anymore? So them going out into the ocean where I can't see them unless I look for them is frustrating. How else to get animals if they disappear? lol.
I wonder if getting a bunch of sand/wood and creating a glass orb or fence around the island would make them stay on land :/
Good question. Fences or a border might help keep the newly ones on the island, unsure of that. And yes they do not despawn. Which is really good at the moment. I do agree the AI does need a bit fixing in the behavior part of it, since it makes no sense for that many to just all a sudden want to swim for their life. Aquatic surface mobs per say. I can understand shallows, but not this.
Well like all things in the game it is all a work in progress and posts like these help the developers understand what is going on and possibly modify something to change what is needed. Although might want to post this in the bug section just in case they miss this post. I don't know if I would call it a bug, but it is pretty close to one imo...

Yeah. I'll go ahead and do a post in the bug section later when I get off work. I just made an animal spawner sooo...maybe it will at least help make the process of getting materials from the animals easier. Thanks for all your input
I dunno. I guess I wasn't around much with Minecraft when the maps were barren. Or at least, I've never had any particular issue with there not being any animals. Before when I made worlds there were plenty. Maybe my XBOX is special?
But true, true. I'm glad there are tons of animals now, even if there's overkill on wolves and they eat everything
Not exactly sure what the developers could do to "fix" the problem. Adding in a lot of animals seems to have made people happy. It'd be nice if the AI's stuck to land like a normal cow/pig would. Lol @ New Zealand comment.
I think there should be some wolf control (other than making them all your pets). I accidentally shot one with an arrow when it jumped in the way of a creeper. Then all the wolves were feasting on me
I haven't been paying much attention to the animals since I'm usually working on my city. I only pay attention when they get in the way and I have to kill them bad piggies.
I used to entirely ignore them. But now I get to the point where I like to have large quantities of meat on my hands so I can go exploring in the mines. I plan on doing some major building projects, but I don't want to switch over to creative mode. Imo, creative mode is fun, but after a while of being able to build stuff with no real work (other than building it) it loses the point.
Well it was quite barren on my map even after destroying tall grass all over my area. When I first played the game before 1.8.2 there were large groups of animals all over my area. I could actually get 64 block of wool by just walking to all of the sheep that had spawned in between my house and swimming pool about 100 blocks by 50 blocks in distance. Then after 1.8.2 I could find any sheep and had to just work through the minecraft nights with no bed. My friend who has vision issues really hated it since he cant see well when its night time in minecraft. So its nice to have them back. I will say there are still a lot of wolves though. I need to get out my diamond sword again.
This happened to me as well. Died 2 times after finding a good spot for my house and setting it all up and whatnot, sadly couldn't find the dumb thing again after that. My world had like 2 cows in the water and about 20+ wolves running around. One of my deaths was trying to thin the wolf herd but got jumped by half a dozen of em at once from behind.
They messed something with the animals up big time with this update, have had issues finding sheep at all in 4 different worlds. Before creative i found absolutely no wolves, after creative i find nothing BUT wolves.
Yeah. My worlds have been completely overrun by wolves. Which is infuriating...since they just LOVE killing sheep. I was actually headed for a sheep to shear it and the wolf killed it before I could get there. I've destroyed tall grass too in my other worlds. Now I'm deforesting the area since I can never see anything -__-
One thing I tried which seems to work is to make little pens all over the place. I've got about 4-5 pens in the ground... Just dig a hole and seal it around the edges with fence. Can put a door for yourself to get in and out, but the animals are stuck there. I'll leave the game on for a bit while I clean house or something and come back with 5 cows in one, 6 pigs in another. Today when I got home from work there were 5 sheep in one pen. Might wanna kill off the wolf population and check your oceans though, since apparently animals like to swim
I find that some people have good luck and some have bad luck. My boyfriend also has Minecraft for his XBOX and his worlds NEVER have animals, but mine somehow DO... they just swim away. But seeing as how there are a lot of wolves in your area, you might want to get some armor made and a good sword (diamond or something). Go kill the wolves off and you should see some animals spawn. If you're in a winter biome, move your home to the forest. I've found that the desert and snow areas are the worst for animals.
Yes, I'd also read somewhere that they won't spawn with the grass growing on land. So I've basically done all I can in any world I've made since the update, but in others, even killing off the grass wasn't enough. Can't say too much for my world right now since I'm still in the process of removing the grass + trees.
I'm glad your game is working well. Some animals will stick around in the shallow water, but eventually they always end up in sea. I was just playing last night and there was like three herds of animals out to see, no land in sight ._.
Yeah, i do believe that animals are over-populated now. Like New zealand has more sheep than humans.
I think that the animal population is just fine now after the recent bugfix update a few days ago.
As for animals in water, I keep stumbling over the odd Jaques Cowsteau myself. Doesn't bother me much, though. I know that animals always have wandered off regardless of there's water or land. If they spawn close to some body of water, they'll end up in it sooner or later. And now that they don't despawn anymore, they'll stay there.

Is it a chicken or is it a duck? - It's a chuck, because dicken sounds stupid.
Yes. The only real reason it's a problem in particular is that since the animals don't depsawn, they have to be killed. If you begin to run scarce of animals (since my world is technically islands, even if they're big) on land, then you have to venture into the water to kill them off. It's time consuming and irritating.

Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't make much of a difference whether I'm hunting animals on land or in water. Admittedly, it's a bit harder to do in water, but a couple of wolves help a lot. You just have to hit an animal once (actually hit it and not shoot it with snowballs or bow and arrow), and the wolves turn into furry killer sharks.
Yeah, use the one block below ground level pen idea. I have one near my base about 30x100, which is in a plains biome, and I have around 50 animals at any one time in there. I actually have to run in and kill em off cause it looks too crowded most times. Outside of that area, yeah I find lots of animals wandering off into the big drink. Maybe its like whales beaching themselves? We have cows and sheep oceaning themselves? lol

Got any screenshots of your city thus far?
Why should humans be the majority of the population?
City slicker.
