Damn, such a wide open question with sooooo many answers. My favorite thing to do is come up with unique machines that are purpose built to serve a function in my world. Like a castle gate that when closed also opens a moat up in front of it, lols lots of fun "showing" that one to my friends. I'm thinking for one of my next projects I'm gonna play with hooking note blocks up to various things like doors and furnaces and rails and such. I'd like to try and get some basic tunes going, although I'm not that musical. Besides that kind of stuff there are always bigger and more complex machines and contraptions to come up with like photo sensor arrays or crazy ass mini computers like Nose_Job builds. God really I could go on and on. Hope I helped.
Heres a link to one of my early videos first 5 minutes is my sand making machine
You can't claim that sand maker as your own, its quite primitive sand maker in that you need to hold down the use button on the leaver, and thus not even semi-automatic. Try looking at jl 2579's design to vastly improve efficiency, he does have a version that works for 1.8. I've built both versions, however I added the options of being able to generate gravel or sand, by simply clicking a button.
Note that the version your running will cease to work come 2.1 i believe or maybe its 2.3 can't quite remember. The beauty of jl's design is that you can use it to generate full sand blocks (not in the broken state, and thus applied to a spleef arena can self repair its floor if using sand.
I facilitate redstone to hide levers for doors all the time. My main world has a secure chest room with obsidian walls with lava inbetween, and an iron door that opens by a lever in another room hidden behind a decoration.
You could make combination locks, player and mob traps, etc. Try making a kind of piston to push people off of ledges, land mines, wood cutting traps, etc.

You can't push chests with pistons.
But i think you can push blocks that a chest is on.
He probably means that you can push blocks to hide the chest.
I saw a video on youtube and there was a chest that came out of the wall like a 2x2 Jeb door.
It was on the PC version though so he might've had some sort of mods.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.

That still won't move the chest.
